CITY AND STATE ITEMS.
fgg' A new evening paper is to be commenced at Indianapolis next week.
g^-The Sheriff of. Sullivan came up yt erday and took charge of Mr. Carver, the murderer, whose arret was mentioned in yesterday's isaue.

During the past two weeks there
have been from ten to twenty-two prisoners in .the county jail. Last evening there were seventeen—five of them women. iswv-
I
Policjc.—The
br.ve selected the following gentlemen as member of the police force: Allen Alloway, Chief of Police.A ssist
ant Policemen, A. J. Bobinson, Thomas Stewart and Wm. Van Brunt.! .TI Day Polios—James O'Mara and Joseph ••""ihmland.
tSFQ"* of the Cincinnati papers tells the editor of the Western Advocate that bin funeral and wedding fees amounted .to jieur $400 a year, the funeral being mure than the wedding. In some instan oes he has received as high as $40 for attending a service. It is a recent thing for church members and others to consid er compensation a feature of the said service. .o-,».w
The Mayor's docket furnished the
fallowing items yesterday: Laura Smith, on charge of intoxication paid fine and coBts amounting to $7,35.
Ann Taylor, "had a wee bit of a fight,', 'Vas fined and coBted to the aame amount, i. was impecunious, and went to jail to aboard it out at fifty cents a day.
Adam Sweitcer, was found drank and disorderly, which cost him $7,10.
The Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows,
in cession at Indianapolis, this week, adjourned "Wednesday eveningi W. Edwards, Esq., and H. D. Scott w.ere in attendance from this city. Among the prominent men of the State in attendance Vera .Gov. Morton, Hon. Thos. MeCarty, Hon. J. A. Funk, Dr. S.
.Kev. ^.^iiteheker, and-Eev.
6. Bebarrei. The attendance of delegates was large, and the order is represented in a very prosperous condition.
We notice by our exchanges that
many of the Horticultural Exhibitions in contemplation have been postponed on account of the backwardness of the season. Strawberries, cherries, and other small fruits, and also vegetables of various kinds, in this part of the country, it is safe to say, are from two to three weeks 1 hind their usual growth at this season of the year.

(111.) Journal of Monday says: "Within the last ten days wheat has declined forty five cents per bushel, trad, flour two dol. ars per barrel, in thi9 markot. The prospects for an abundant wheat crop in this ieeHon"were"never better, and we confident look fur a still farther decline in both wheat and flour. The large quanties of wheat said to be stored by speculators must now be brought out, and they must reap the fruit of their efforts to keep the price of flour to twenty dollars per barrel 1"
The Child Mcrdkr.—It
is ascertain
ed beyond scarcely a doubt that James M. wrence and Mrs Martha Phillips, who were arrested Wednesday evening, are thu father and mother of the child lound iutb« river dnys since. Both ar« now in til. The Grand Jury were investigating the cuso yesterday, and in the evening returned an indictment, the na ture of which we cannot elate. Lawrence has heretofore borne a good character for a long time was bookkeeper in the hoase of lack, Ash & Co., and up to .the time of hii arrest was empl oyed as a clerk in the hardware house of Cory & Mancourt. He boarded with Mrs. Phillips, the mother of the child, who resides
Alulborry street, between Second and Tuird, and is, we learn, the daughter of a Vjry rtMpuciable and worthy citisen of Oiay County, named Gregory. », ,.
"Obixpkd Haib."—One ot our exchanges is out iu an article wherein the editor pitches wrathfuily into the new style of crimped hair, so fashionable among the fair sex. He predicts baldness, blindness, deafness, sore eyes, blind staggers, and all the ills of the catalogue, for those who persist in following the "mode," and asks his lady friends how they would look
coitume,
with tbe tops of their heads as
bare as the soles of their feet. The head of our cotemporary is level on the hair question, but when he gets older he will learn that the "old boy" himself could not keep & woman lrom following the fashion however ridiculous may be.

Late Counterfeits.—The

following
new and dangerous counterfeits are pub iisbed:
National
Bank,
Jackson,
Michigan, 5s, imitation. The engraving is said to be well done, but the counter* feit may be detected by the words "thi note," on the back of the bill. On the counterfeit, these words touch the ornamental border, while in the genuine they do not touch. The plate will undoubtedly soon be improved and altered tu many •f the National Currency banks.
Bank, Indianapolis,
2s, imitation. Goddess of Liberty, farm ers, artisans, &c., &c., on lower right cor nes battle of Lexington on lower left corner—batism of Pochahontas on back of note. The general appearance of the note is good and calculated to deceive.— Observe on tbe counterfeit the butt of tiie uiusket on the lower left corner touches the scroll work around the figure "29, and the hand of the female on the man breast, the figures can scarcely be seen.— On the genuine no part of the gun touch es, and the fingers are quite distinct. On the counterfeit, under the words '*tliit note,"
&c.,
there are but three flourishes—
the genuine has four also one between United and States, which is omitted in the counterfeit.
Foubth National
Bank, Philadel
phia, Pa. 20s, imitation: same as 20s on the First National Bank, of Indianapolis Ind.
First National-Bank,
Ohio
Portland, Cons
necticut, imitation—same as the 20s described on the First National Bank of In dianapolis, excepting that eleven stars have been added to the shield beside the. eagle on the back of the note which now corresponds with the genuine, each hav ing seventeen stars. The plate no doubt, will further improved upon, and is liable to be altered to any of tbe National cur rency banks. Care should be taken in receiving all notes of this denomination
National Bank,
Cincinnati,
Ohio, 100s, imitation viz battle of Lake Erie—Declaration of Independence on the back of the note. One of the peculiarities of the counterfeit is, that the letter "T" in the word "Maintain" fon the right end of the note is defective and looks like the letter "I."
Fruit Prospect. Fruit Ridge Nubskry,
The prospect for a fine orop of fruit] of all kinds, in the vicinity of Terre Haute was very flattering, notwithstanding sev eral hard frosts, up to the morning of 8th inst. By eight or nine o'clock of that morning, the falling air castles were to be seen in every direction, which had beeh built on the anticipated fruikorop. Jack Frost and Negative Coloric had united' their forces on the night of the 7th, and charged bayonets on the blossoms and young fruit, whioh not being prepared for defense, after a severe and desperate struggle capitulated.
After the smoke of battle had cleared away, it was found that three-fourths to nine-tenths of the strawberry blossoms and young strawberries were destroyed.-f Some patches from local causes being much less* injured than others.\but with what escaped Injury, and thenewblossoms
I should judge there would be at least, half a crop of strawberries and if we have frequent showers till the season is over, the yield will be perhaps two thirds of an average crop. Blackberries and raspberries were not forward enough to be injured, but patches of the Lawton biack berry were materially injured by the winter- i~~.
We will have in this vicinity ia
S a am in at a to day, 23d, I find the injury to the first setting of strawberries, to be still more severe than is represented above.
