is important to the Union party

that every candidate for Councilman on its ticket shall be elected next week. The office continueb for two years years, and is a very important position. Our city is growing rapidly and our mnnicipal legislation interests* everybody now much more than it did a few years ago. Every Union candidate oa the general ticket, no matter how humble the office ought to be elected by a handsome majority. ,n

We learn Hon. Thos. H. Nelson

late Minister to Chili, delivered a lecture at the Centenary Church Tuesday evening, on religious matters in that country, the excellence of which we hear spoken of in such high term that we can only wonder and regret that no public announcement was made outside of the two Metb odist Churches.

A number of our citizens were

amusing themselves, at the echo between the Terre Haute House and the new building on the east, night before last. The sound brought back the memories of the mountain homes of youth of some of them, who never before had heard the sound on table land. The reverberations of the echo numbered from ten to seventeen— and were considered very remarkable The stillness of the night favored the. sounds.

There is more in our city elec

tion next week than a mere selection among citizens as to who shall fill the offices. A contest of principles and of par ty organization is also involved. If, for any cause, Republicans shall fail to elect every officer nominated by them, it will be heralded everywhere as a Democratic victory. Democrats are never no-party men on the day of election, They always vote for every candidate on their ticket and get everybody else they can ^o do likewise. The Union party must fol low their example.

A HOOSIEK ABBOAD.—J. H.F Childers, the famous musketeer, formerly of this State, and well known in this city, is nofw in Paris, France, astonishing the French by his wonderful l'eats with the 'muqk'et and bayonet. The papers slate that he applied to the manager of a theater for an engagement, and a9 part of tho contract agreed to fight and put hora du combat with his musket and bayonet, any five French soldiers similarly armed. Tbe manager would not give him the engagement unless he would doff his Yankee character and permit himself to be announced as a French expert. This he indignantly refused to do, and the negotiation failed. Cb.lders was a soldier in the army of tbe Union the first two years of the war, serving in an Indiana regiment. Since that he has wandered about the world giving exhibitions, and perfecting himself in tbe use of tbe musket, which he handles with a deitaritv akin to the miraculous. f,

AN INTEBESTINO OCCASION.—At the regulnr meeting of the church social at Centenary, last Tuesday evening, the Hon. T. H. Nelson, of this city, in re sponse to an invitation to deliver an impromptu address, held a large audience spell-bound for an hour and a half. Eis subject was the progress of J&igious thought in South America—whioh he introduced by nn exceedingly succinct and interesting allusions to the present political status of the Bepublic of Chili, together with the most instructive geographical and historical sketches, in all of which the entire audience were deeply interested.— But any attempt of ours to give anythlnglike a synopsis of the main points of the lecture would do great injustice to the speaker we therefore desist with the single remark that we have listened to nu-„ merous set lectures, which, for interest' of matter ind elegance of expression, would suffer'in comparison with this impromptu effort .of the Hon. Mr jNelson. "We trust the people of Centenary will endeavor to avail themselves agaiu of the services of •neso able* and competent. Another interesting feature of this social gathering was the excellent music dispensed by the choir. Seldom have we heard difficult anthems rendered in better taste or with
