Great Eastern left New York, on
"Wednesday last for France, with only only one hundred and ninety-one passengers and a very small quantity af freight. Her present trans-Atlantic trip is a dead failure and will not pay expenses by a great deal. Her accommodations are calculated for two thousand passengers, and an immense deal of freight. It is doubtful whether she will continue long ing the business as a passenger packet Her receipts for the present trip will scarcely pay for her coal.
THE
story of "the Virginians in Texas''
which bus been issued as a serial in Harpers Magazine, during several months past, is practically terminated in the May number now before us. It is quite a readable story, simple in plot it is true, but full of well told domestic scenes of a newcountry ail entwining a sound and health ful in oral. The story was written and accepted just before the rebellion and the author promises a concluding chapter detailing the fortunes of the "Virginians" during the war in the next Harper. I

STE

Government has finally purchased
a site lor the erection of anew Post office building in the city of New York. The lot is a portion of the City iiall Park and the price paid to the city therefor is the round sum of live hundred thousand dollars. The Now York Herald estimates the value of the site at from three co fivo millions and thus figures that the city has lost from two and a half to four and a half millions thereby. If the Government ever erects a building to cost in proportion to the site the New York Post office will end'in being a pretty costly affair. The New Yorkers have been Wanting a Post olfico for along time and are now in a fuir way of getting a pretty costly one, especially so to the Government.

An Indiana association similar

THE
recent action of the Supremo

It brought all parties to know that the court would sustain the legislation of Congress on the reconstruction question, and also forced the President to declare his intentions as to the execution and enforcement of these laws. The statements of the Attorney Generai, by authority as wo may suppose, made during the discussion before the Supreme Court, that the President means to onl'oroo fairly and promptly the Military

appointments to the
Austrian miesion brings up some new questions regarding it. Tho present prospect is that the Senate will, by resolution declare the position not vacant. If this be done the theory is that it will reinstate Mr.
under the provisions of the
Tenure of Office bill. The reasoning is this: His resignation was equivalent to a removal, and it not being concurred in by the Senate, it is rescinded and he becomes reinstated. Mr.
JOHNSON
advocate this doctrine as it will rid him of all further annoyances abuiit tho Austrian mission. It has been out of his power to find any body acceptable to the Senate to fill it as yet, and he does not appear to be trying very hard to do so.—

Strikes in Europe.
[London Correspondence New York Times.] The great railway strike has begun, and begun with one of the richest and most liberal companies—a company that is willing to givo round prices, and which has voluntarily set aside out of its own profits more than $100,000 for the benefit of its employes. But the men insist on trade principles. No piece-work, and all paid alike. The driver Jof the lightning express must have no more than that of a common goods train. No reward for skill or experience, but one dead level of workingman fequality. The company gives notice that its tables are in abeyance. If the driver on tho other lines strike, what will become of London? How are the great mails tojjbe carried to Queenstown and to Dover It is high time this child's play and fool's play was done with. The great lines of communication, the mail routes of an empire, and the means of moving troops to quell au insurrection or repel an invasion must not be stopped by the resolution of a trade society. It is running the thing into the ground. There must be some limit to strikes, and this must be pretty near it. In ordinary trades it does not so much matter. The bronze workers in Paris are on a strike, and are sustained by contributions from London societies but we can stand it a little while without bronzes. Thire has been moro than a strike—a riot with destruction of property, in' a small rnanufacturingitown in the north-east of France, which called for military interference.— This was a riot against machinery. The masters were introducing improved looms, which would dispense with half the manual labor—that is. enable each man to do twice as much. But such machinery in a little while benefits workmen.
English workmen are instigating and aiding strikes in the continent, because they wish aid and co-operation in return. But this sometimes works curiously. Some time ago the Paris hatters bad a strike, and the London hatters sympathized with and helped them but tho Paris dealers were all the time supplied with English made hats. But we ,can not so well be carried about England on French rail--ways.
Thestopdage of nearly all the Brighton and 'South Coast trains yesterday, and the surburban and Crystal Palace trains from three London stations, produced the greatest excitement and consternation.— The company put on all the men it could find. The most important trains were run by station masters. The stock fell three per cent. The North-eastern, cov ering a quarter of England, is now threat ened with a strike, and London and the whole business of the country is at the mercy of-the engine-drivers, who are not more numerous, assuredly more gerous than the Fenians, and who can neither be imprisoned, shot, hanged, nor sent to penal servitude.
A Sad Case—Marriage and Desert ion —A Precious Scoundrel. The Leavenworth Conservative of the 18th inst., relates the following:
Some weeks since a rather prepossessing young man named Robert Harrison Hays, succeeded in obtaining an introduction to tho familv of a Mrs. Louisa Rice, a widow in Glasgow, Mo. The family consisted of the old lady, a son perhaps twenty years of age, and two daughters, the eldest rather good looking and of a marriageable age, while the other i? an artless girl ten years old. The young mans acquaintance with the eldest daughter ripened into friendship, and into what she know to be love. The family it is said wore in fair circumstan ces, the old lady having money, how much we know not, but Hays determined to get it. In due time the practiced scoundrel and daughter were married Shortly afterwards, Hays prevailed upon the mother to dispose of a portion of her worldly effects i:*l remove to Leavenworth, stating that he had friends here and setting forth tho advantages to accrue. His arguments prevailed and the family embarked on the War Eagle, few days ago for this city. Fverything was apparently satisfactory until the boat reached "Wyandot, wh"en, having sue ceeded in gaining the widow's little store, Hays left tho packet as it was leaving the levee, and has not been heard of since. In his hurry he neglected to pay his wife's fare, as well as that of the rest of the family, and they landed here penniless and desolate. They were given temporary accommodations and supplied with the necessarit's ot lifo, until some arrange' ments could be made to send them back home or have them cared for by the city.
Tho son is subject to sevens fits, under one of which he was horribly suffering yesterday. Dr. Shannon kindly visited him and he was apparently recovering last evening. As a whole, it is only another instance, now too common, of woman's confidence and man's depravity —a crime, perhaps, which the law may not reach, but not the less deserving of suvero punishment.

Xapoleonaiid Bismarck will Hesitate Before Fighting. The cession of Luxembourg is a new incident of far lesser importance than many of those which were supposed to threaten the European peace after Nikplsburg and Prague, and which we have quietly and happily survived. Tho latest dates from Berlin announce that the scheme of the sale has been abandoned and, although the news may still be premature, it is extremely probable that this wi.l prove to be the final upshot of the matter. So long as the relations between France and German lie in the hands of two such men as were supposed to have learned to know and value each other at Biarritz, we think tho world ought not to too lightly cherish sinister apprehensions. Both Napoleon and Bismarck are fully aware of .the magnitude of tho enterprise to which a moment of rashness might commit them. Both of them have ac» complished much in their lifetime. and it is natural for both of them to shrink from new trials which could lose the benefit or tarnish tho glory of furmer achievements. Neither of them i3 young, neither of them exults in that firm, exuberant health which urges men to incessant activity. Peace would be equally a boon to France and Germany but while it is difficult to see what good a war, however, successful, might bring to France, the mere danger of it is used to promote the union, aud thereby tho strength and greatness of Germany.
