The old stagurs are sorely distressed. Not a few put thu best face on tho matter, and mouti.ingly declare that not all tho odors from "Araby the Blest" are half so dear to their delightful senses as the twice delicious aroma africaine.
Even so, it choaked tho throat as yet, and the griuis were simply grim I am writing of tho politicians as a school, on all sides of all party lines, and professional politicians only are the men who make tho manly art of office getting, the wio absorbing employment of essentially selfish lives. It is not a pleas, ant confession fur a man who has voted with cither party to muke, but his moral digestion is received by the candid eflbrt to acknowledge tho palpable truth, that professional politicians in his own party are in no important respect superior to professional politicians in any other party They aro men to whom "platformB are more ladders, every plank a round

When one is at home, and has been long at home, plodding his daily rounds o( work and weariness, ho thinks it might be good if his beat of boil lay eastward or southward—or even northward. Thus generally, of all places thus peculiarly although perhaps not pre-eminently, of us who plod these prairie streetg. But a journey to the Jkast is an infallible specific. We find the Alleghanies sterile and the Groon Mountains barren, and the Nutmeg State tough and the Bay State small, and the Empire State placid" we find no Stale like our State, non'ountains so good to stay by as our own dull prairiesl Even Chicago welcomes us back—not that she eares anything for us, but that we care a grout deal for her,, and she, like any other fomi'iine, is "quite willing.
This is a feature of a genuine Westernized character worthy tht- attention of old fogies. Wo grant tho highiof iLe mountains, the beauty of tho vnllies, the luxuries of sea-shore breezes, and the brevity of trunk railway lines we confess the flatness ol tho prairie, the stupidity of lagoons and bayous, whether at Calumet or at Bitslrop we plead guilty to slight structures, balloon fro sues, and eellarless homes but we would just as soon go back to tho East as intelligent chickens would turn again to tho original egg-shell.

A really startling list of horrible crimes disfigure the record of the city for the week. Murder, suicide, assiasination, horrible cruelties, poisonings, hydrophobias, frauds of grievous gro«sness—it is sickening even to review the titles withou, piiu.:ing upon unutterable details.
Tho river is open—has been open for a firtnight, and was scarcely opened before it was filled with woli-laden craft. The Bridge-nuisance jjrows more a nuisance than ever, now thai, we see men diving so bravely at tho bed of thu stream near Washington street, and promising to dive and delve and delve and dive until there shall bo daylight under tho river as well as above, it will be a full year more bofori tho glorious coimnn ination is attained. This year will break forever the bonds of isolation, and the next shall usher in the Era of Absolute Freedom! Dixon.

How It reels to be Drowned—Described by a Han Who nan Tried lt.| [From the Mill vaukee Wisconsin, April 4.]
A few days 3igo a workman employed at one of the tanneries on the west side of tho river, but Jiving on the eaat sido, named Grace, attempted to cross to his work upon the ice. When part way over the river, the ic..- bn.Ue beneath Grace, and be tell through. He sank immediatly to the bottom, but was taken up bv one of thos» hooks employed for the purpose, and by strpug efforts, the sparkid life, which had apparently departed, was brought back, and Grace still lives, although having been as near death's door as a man could very well go and return to this sublunary sphere.
Wisconsin
met Grace and had a conversation with him relative to his narrow escape. During the conversation the man gave a sketch of the sensations which Unexperienced while under the water, which we" will endeavor give as tho words tell from his lips. Said Grace I"thought that morning, as it had been stiffening over night, tbat the ice would be stiff enough to bear me, and as I was a iittle late that morning, and as it was along way around by the bridge, I would save time "by «oing across the ice instead of going around by tho bridge. I Went on thinking about what I sheuld say to tho foreman to save being docked a quarter of a day, and wasn't thinking but what all was safe enough, when I trod on a weak spot, and went right down through. It was so sudden like, and the water was so cold, and I suppose I was so frightened that nil my senses went away in a flush. I hit my head on the edge of the ice, and it made me stupid, and that's what made it seem so like a dream perhaps. It seem, od like kept sinking, sinking all the time—not going down^likea.man natural, iy would in the water, but going down fast—so i'a»t that it took all my breath away.
Although I know I kept my eves shut all the time, it seemed like. I could see all about me, and like 1 was in the midst, lirst of a great field of blackness which -eftine up all around me, and was very tbiok. As I went down, this kept grow-* iilg lighter and brighter, and from being sort of gloomy at lirst, soon began to grow pleasar.ter, and my head, which seemed all stuffed Hip and'stupid, began to be clearer and elfearer. I have heard a great deal about Paradise, and all sudden like it seamed I had come to that place. I didn't feel like I was anybody else, but all niy senses c.mio to me, and the first I knew I was wondering where I was, and how I came theie. 1 felt as if I was just so full of happiness as I-could be. Everything 1 had done in,ii)y life seeme,d like it was written on a little page, and had it right before me, and could tell it all, even down to the little things. Bafore me I could see great green and purple aud red clouds floating along, and would hear angels and fairies singing, and 1 know they wcro happy, .and when I tried to^help them, I felt as happy as tiiey were.
I tried to think it was a dream, but 1 couldn't, and didn't feel as if was at all like death, and while everything seemed so clear to me, even to what the foreman would say when he four.d I did not come, I wondered if ever ljsbould go hack again and if I did, what a time I should have telling tho boys where I had been and what Iliad seen. Every good action I had done came up and looked me in the fac i.
and although some of the bad actions, all of which 1 could see standing at my back, tried to come up, they could not.1 cauuot tell you how happy I felt, and how long I felt so. It was drowning, know, aud if a man only knew about it, and there wasn't any danger of being brought back again, it would be the hap piest way to die that ever wds invented.— But the coming back, oh that was awful.
While I was feeling so good as 1 tried to tell you about, and it didn't seem as if it was a little while, but like it was year: and years, while I was thinking, itseomed like one of the bad actions crowded away one of tho good ones, aud cauie up and looked me in tho face, and instantly all of the goed actions, and ail the ungels and the Jairies, became devils of tho worst kind, and (ill the colored clouds became bUck, and the devils closed round me and tiiey yelled in my ears, and pulled mo this way and thai, and then all the clouds btcame precipices and caves and holes, and it seemed as ifthe evil ones were trying to push me into all of these at once, yelling and howling all the tima, and when I resisted, tearing whole hands full of llesh off my bones and hair out of my head. And they seemed to gc into my mouth, and my nose, and my ears, and tear away inside of me until I was so full of misery thaL I prayed they might kill moat once and when I tried to tell them so, it was like us if my bead would burst asunder. As I can't tell you how happy I was before, so I can't near tell you how 1 suffered now. 1 had heard a great deal ab'ut hell, unJ 1 thought I was there for certain. Sometimes the devils inside of un: would be-flrc and, burn me. and then they would be an ocean, and would spangle and bo drowning. Aud when I seemed to be suffering most, all of a sudden 1 cume ort of out of it, and tho boys wele taiiding about me, and trying to bring me to liii, and then I knew tbut 1 had been nearly drowned, but they bad saved mo. Bat I tell you as It !d theai, if I should ever eome so near drowning again, don't try to save me, for I hud ten thousand times rather die feeling like I did whou I yeemed in paradise, than to be brought to uud suffer ull the torments I did afterward.
A Loak into a Dissecting Uooni.,.
From the New York Timed.]
To those who are interested in these matters we may state that tho student in anatomy io introduced iutoaJong difeeoU ing halt, well-ventilated and lighted from the roof. An array of tables, numbering perhaps two dos- n, stretches around tbe hall. e«eh with a'slanting surface'covered withziuc. Salfli cts are provided by parVies, regularly employed for that purpose, .who, notwithstanding tho safety of their trade, still prefer to uinktj it tho business of tho night. Tt.ese subjects are brought tVCiiii the island which New York uses as the'Potter's Field, and are the remains of paupers, criminals and those unfortuna women who form krge a class in city life. They are coftyeytd Jnto the recep-tion-room, and each oife injected with an antiseptic, ooutaining. zinc, mercury, or ars -nic, With plaster of Paris,"and the hofe fnixliire colored to a tint of re5. The aorta is opened and- the arteries filled in a similar manner by means of a large ana powertul syringe. After this preparation the body will Tesist decomposition from two to six weeks. As soon
on the table a class of live students attack the subject, one assuming the head, and each of tbe others -working at one of the limbs. In order

,,ect to the appearance of the
_ects, it may be premised that they are not striking illustrations of human beauty. On the other hand, they are generally the vilest, lowest and most unfavorable specimens of the rac?. They are tho victims of famine or of exhausting disease—or are those who pined away in weary senility. Occasionally some robust form still bears evidence of a life of crime, and the seowl of abject depravity yet lingers upon the debase4 countenance. With these, however, are sometimes contrasted young and delicate shapes which suggest the history of early shame and a career of misery suddenly changing from the gaudy saloons of splendid vice this charnalliojse of science. On one occasion of this kind the students were seen to cluster with looks of deep compassion around one whose life, just entering on blasted womanhood, had been terminated by sudden death. Jier leet and hands were small and white, her hair fell in curls about her neck, and in her features there lingered the traces of former beauty.— What was her history? What a volume could havo been written of life's battles, temptations and miseries, if thoBe lips could have told their story. It was a spectacle which recalled the sympathetic lines of one of the bards of sorrow
"Touch her not gc*rnfaily Think of her mournfully, Gently »od humanely Not of the stains of her,^ All that rem-una of her
Now is pare womanly."
The dissecting room of an afternoon is an interesting scene. A hundred young men may be seen, mostly-clad in black cotton gowns,-sitting on high stools around tho slanting tables, and using forceps and scalpel as occasion may require, laying bare the muscle, and tracing arteries or investigating nerves. A lew tneercliaums relievo tbe heavy atmosphere by the flavor of tobacco, and a noisy bum fills tbe hall, occasionally breaking out into laughter as some joke enlivens the quiet pur* suit of science. One may be whistling in a low key, another humming a snatch of familiar song. The opera may be criticisod over a decomposed arm,-whilo the topic with another will be tho party he attended last night, and the boquet, offered to some beauty by a hand that now, like Lear's "smells of mortality." Every little while the. various lecture bnlla are heard, and thero is a running in and out in obedience to this important summons. Visit tho same spot at a later hour, when darkness and solitude invest,it with their solemn mantle. All is still. There is no one thero but yourself and the dead. A dim gas-burner throws a ray sufficient to show the nature and surroundings of the scene or perhaps the moon shining through the broad window, lights up the I'liact'v faces that yet retuin thoir natural covering, giving a still more fearful aspect to the half-denuded 6kulls thut lie around. There is then in this dissecting theatre much tbat is sad, fy«rful, and revolting but it also has a tinge of the ro mantic perhaps it might bo added, the poetic. Xn sucfc a placo Edgar A. Poo might have caught a fresh inspiration, and Hawthorne found a new idea to work up in his weird and harrowing style.
General"'Sherman on lforsc-Stealing, We have been furnished, says the Selma (Alabama)
following letter from General Shurman in reply to a Confederate clergyman asking to have his horse restored to him. It is terv good specimen of the erratic humor of that eminent raider, and will doubtless provoke a smile frcin many a Confed., who was himself occasionally "careless in a search for title" where horses, beehives, or'vegetables wero concerned
Atlanta, Ga., Sept 16, 18GG.
Rev." Confederate Army: Dear Sik
14, is received. I approach a question involving the title to a horse with great diffidence, for the laws of war, that mysterious code of which we talk so much ou know so little, are remarkably silent on tho "horse He is a beast so tempting to the soldier—to him of wild cavalry, the fancy artillery, or the patient infantry that I find more difficulty in recovering a worthless, spavined beast than in paying a million of "greenbacks so I fear must reduce your claim to one of finance, and refer you to the great Board of Claims in Washington.
That may roach your case by the time your grandchild becomes a great grandfather. Privately, I think it was a shabby thing in the scamp of the Thirty-First Missouri who took your horse, and the Colonel or his Brigadier should have returned him but I cannot afford to undertake to make good the sins or oiuis sions of my own Colonels and Brigadiers, much less those of a former generation.— "When this cruel war is over," and peac once more gives you a parish, I will promise, if near you, to procure out of one of Uncle Sam's corrals a beast that will replace the one taken from you so wrongfully. But now, 'tis impossible we have a big journey before us, and will need all we have, and I fear more too so look out when the Yankees are about, and hide your bensts, for my experience is that all soldiers are very careless in search for title. I know General Hardee will confirm this tny advice. 1 With great respect,
