CITY AND STATE ITEMS.
The City Schools take next week
as a holiday—the interval between two terms.
wsr A mill, for the manufacture of straw paper, is in successful operation at Valparaiso.
Thomas Briggs, Esq., has been ap
pointed administrator of the estate of Warren Genung. *ti"
The YoungJMen'a Christian Asso
ciation now numbers one hundred and thirty-live members, and the number is increasing at each meeting.
FEELS—We
learn from
the Indianapolis Journal that surfaco indications of a deposit of petroleum have been discovered in the coal lands of Mick & Co. situated some throe miles west of Brazil, inClay county. So strong is the faith of old experienced men in the oil business, that the land has been leased by a company of ^capitalists from Kokomo, this State, who purpose to commence the experiments immediately, and they are to come to that place this morning, with a full supply of machinery, to test the oleaginous question. Professor R. T.
Brown gives it as his opinion that there is a rich deposit of auriferous liquid not very far below the coal vein.
MAD Doos.—We understand that two dogs have recently been killed in this city that exhibited strong symptoms of hydrophobia. By Indianapolis papers we note almost every day fresh cases of mad dogs and one or two people bitten, and the thing seems really becoming epidemic.— A similar estate of affairs exists at Evansville, and other places are more or less troubled. Would it not be well for our City Council to take some steps to rid the town of hundreds of worthless curs before the rabies are developed in our midst.
It is not generally known that the
rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association are free to every young man in the city, whether a member of the Association or not, and that a cordial invitation is given to each and every one to avail themselves of the accommodations offered. One of the rooms is handsomely fitted up as a conversational room, supplied with a number of attractive features, together with writing materials for any wishing to write a letter. In an adjoining room will be found the leading magazines and papers of the day. The young men of the Association are determined to make their rooms a favorite placs of resort, and the initiatory steps thus far taken look well towards a favorable result.

ADVICE.—In the introduction to the "Bigelow Papers," James Russell Lowell gives tho following list of what he considers sins committed by newspaper reporters, and insists that the use of such phrases is wicked in the extreme, and calculated to produce a very bad style of wris ting among tho readers of the paper.— What does Hosea Bigelow know about such Jthings As Artemus Ward said of Chaucer, "he may have genius, but ho don't know how to spell." However, we publish his criticism:
