•(.] 1 /'SATIX#—A writer in an exchange treating upon the the subject of "Saving," saysf'Let a young man twenty years of age start with nothing, but save fifty dollars at the end of each year from his earnings, and koopthe same at six per cent interest, investing the interest each year, in sixty years, or at the age of eighty yesrs." j?e would have $26,674. SOppose he could save two hundred dollars each year, investing it at' six per cent, in sixty years he would have 9106,624, or in thirty years he would have $16,810, and in fifteen years his would have $4,654. If he could save $1,000 eacn year he would have in sixty jeare, $533,120, ^or^.more than half a million. I

Many a young man starting without means, scarcely think it possihle that he could aequire as much as his neighbor, eighty years of age, worth $50,000. If he will reflect on the above, or make the calculation for himself, he will find that if he saves pne hundred dollars each year, and makes six per cent, out of it, that he will have in sixty years' time $36,312."

GAS.—In Thursday's Cincinnati^Gwimercialvre find lengthy article on the •"manufacture" and Consumption of Gas," *ir4tfen by 3^r. George. Rugan, SuperinTenclerit of "the Gas Works in this city.— Among other items,it is stated that it has beej^i^djpii trial that the ordinary iron' burners actually passed twenty»flve to fifty per cent, more the seqond year .end after, than when first put on. The parat graph below may prove a useful hint to

Our gas consumers: Now, it is certain that consumers do complain, and with reason, that, although they have the sanie number of burners that they had the previous year, that they are lighted and extinguished about the same time, yet their bills the last year are larger 'than during the same period previously!' This need not "be at all surprising to any intelligent or thinking man.— $he burners,"in a large majority of instances, are composed of metals—iron, brass, &c. At the point of combustion great heat is generated, and that, .continued a longer or-shorter period, a greater or less degroe of oxidation, resulting in exfoliation, takes place, thus causing the holeStd be stopped up and the metals to scale off pins and other means of re* moving1 obstructions are inserted, and consequently the .apertures for the emission of gas are gradually increased in size, the gas passes off in broader, denser volumetand not in the thin sheets of flame they were designed to pass, and consequently the consumer doe% not get even as good alight from a larger quantity of gas as he'did when his burners were new.—

Again, the cocks on the various fixtures become worn, the gas, in passing, cuts out the brass, and these, more or less, leak.— We frequently hear it said, 'Our fixtures 4oak,-but it is so small that, although we can detect it, we can not make !it ignite.' These causes combined will, in the course of ono, two, or three'months, the time for Which the gas-bills may run, make quite ati aggregate—only proving the extreme delicacy and accuracy of the meter, whose operations are so frequently villified.

LmxE GIRLS.—Warm

ly and fashionably-drwsed mothers may be seen on the street at any hour, lending their shivering little daughters around, with hardly enough of clothing on their lower extremities to protect them from sight, to say nothing of the piercing blasts. An exchange says:

Yesterday we saw a little girl led by its mother throJgh the streets. Her little collar and muff and hat were of the warm* est fur, and well she needed them, for it was bitter cold but her little legs, bare and blue, between her stockings and skirts, told a shivering tale.

Who does not daily see the same thing Little, frail girls with head and shoulders bundled in unneeded furs, while from the feet to a point above the knees, the little darlings are almost literally naked. Of course mothers who thus dress theit children are very far from intending to kill them, or render them invalids, but such is the probable result of this fashionable exposure. It is true that most children have their limbs well protected, because most mothers have an intelligent regard for the health of their offspring, but there are many who are clad as we have mentioned, and to the mothers of these we appeal.

As little girls are now dressed, their skirts are no protection against the wind or cold below the knee, and what do they have as a substitute? Linen drawers reaching below ihe knee, and there meeting the top of stockings which usually have about half the warmth possessed by men's socks. Let us compare this armor With the .clothing of boys and men, who have at l&astfiVe times "the power of endurance possessed by the little girl. The father of this same little six-year old girl would* consider himself coldly clad, and a certain candidate for rheumatism, if his lower extremities were not protected against the winter blasts by, first, thick wool socks reaehing more than half way to the knoe second, wool drawers reaching from the waist to the feet third, bootlegs of double leather roaching nearly to the knee and, fourth, thick wool pantaloons covering all else and reaching to the foot. And yet the same father permits his delicate, blue-veined child to go out iti wioter with legs encosedjin a single thickness of linen 1 How would he like to walk the winter streets clad in linen pantaloons, and nothing else
