Wat The Union Prayer Meeting enter, ed upon tho fourth week of its existence yesterday morning, under very favorablo auspices. It is evidently gaining more of the attention of business men and nonoliurch members. Instead of being, as prayw. meetings very often are, composed almost entirely of women, there are present representatives of both sexes in very fair proportions. Those who conduct and engage 1n the meetings seem' very much in earnest and claim that much good has already been accomplished. Certainly no city needs wise and earnest Christian efforts more than Terre Haute. We learn that in many, or some at least, of the business houses, the members of the firm and tbe clerks divide equally and "take a turn about" in attending the meetings. Why would not an arrangement of this sort be wise in moro houses? Nothing would contribute more to the general interest of business firms than honest and moral clerks, and nothing moro surely would make them such than true piety. "Lordliness is profitable unto all things having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come/' So tbe Good Book ••Jeimna.viw tki says.

Man had been an inhabitant of this glorious footstool less than two thousand years, when God declared—Genesis- 6, 5, that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imtnaginution of the thoughts of his heart wuo only evil continually,
and that the Lord sail I will
destroy man whom I have created from the face of ttie earth. By some, it is supposed that there wero then on the earth one thousand million of souis, b}" others, at least a hundred million. Only eight souls survived that destruction, which is rather more than ninety-nine per cent. Do you believe this scripture account Diogenes If you do not, I cannot say to you as did Paul to Agrippa, I know that thou believcst the propheU. How mauy were saved oi that vast number in a tuture, through the vicarious suiForings and sacrifices of Christ I know not. 1 believe that Christ's sacrifice, or the benefits of that sacnficeis co-existunt with the fall. I believe also, that all rnfan ts, until they arrive to an ago of aecountability, are saved through that atonement alone. John Calvin held to a moro strict interpretation of God's words, and. did not include all children "this saving provision.
But what was that holy and Godly man. Who made God's word his daily study and spent nights of earnest and honest prayer, to the author of the great book, to illumine his mind and direct bim in the unfolding of its divine truths, that should entitle him to be called grim old John Calvin, and as the author of a atra-bilai-ious theoloy, not so good as a heathen philoso-'

phy. I hardly know what kind of theology aira-bilarious
I
thought the interest of religious, truths, and the purity of evangelical religion were too much compromised in the views and sentiments expressed in that criticism. It seemed to me that Diogenes drew his in gpiration and sentiments more l'rom a popular infideb'philosopher than from the pure and spiritual Gospel of the Savior and his Aposflies. His la^t article i.rmfirmi me in that opinion. Diogener^professes to have changed bis position trom & phi losophical stand point, to one up a tree, in order to taken bird's eye view of the field, as-it looks to him frotn that elevation.— Well, really, I don't think,, lodging from what his jaundiced eyes saw there, that his moral vision was at all benefitted by the change. I remember reading an account of a noted individual of olden time, that got into a tall sycamore tree, in order to get a bird's eye view of the Savior as he waspaning along. But he was told to come down and receive instruction at his own house. He obeyed, confessed his sins, and received salvation. I have no idea that I can reach Diogenes with any texts of Scripture until he comes down from that tree. I commend to him sincerely, the example, humility, and faith of Zacheus. In sending to Diogenes Scriptural texts, I wish to assure him that I do not aim thsm at his head, as he alledges I did, but at his heart. It' only a few—not a/Jwtiarfc of them—sent him in my former article, produced such a fluttering of his mind and flapping of his wings, I know not what might be tha effect of one whole sermon like that of the Apostle Peter, found in Acts 2d.
is, for my dictionary
does not inform me. Hoathen philosophers may understand the term better than Calvin did.
But Diogenes does not/ stop with Calvin. Bising in his flight of vision from that lofty tree of philosophy and the wisdom of an nncient Sage, his mind runs back over the history of the early church, founded by Christ and his Apostles, and he discovers that Christ was in error, that Paul was beside himself, that abnegation from tho world, the fundamental doulrino of religion and tbe church is fanaticism and a mistaken notion of what i3 true religon. He would havo us, of the church, disregard the comn.and to come out from the world and be separate: that is, in principles aud abstaining from worldly, t»r anti-christian practices, and return again to the weak and beggarly elements of tho world and bo in bondage and sin. Paul addressed the foolish Galations on this point—Gal. 3d., and commend the whole chapter and the following too, to Diogenes' careful study.
I do not deny that fanaticism has existed in the church, and among its leaders, and at times so greatly, as to unhinge all the faculties of reason and drive truth and grace from the heart entirely. But that was not the religon of Christ, and is no argument against a church organized and founded upon a rock, and governed by the principles of the Gospel. .Remember, if you please Diogenes, that Christ said unto one: "That tbou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church: and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
The libel upon our Pilgrim fathers, I pass over as unworthy of any considerai'iA tion.

elti 'M i£»-4* W: There is a great ^deal of superstition in the world yet, notwithstanding the glori. ous light of gospel truth. But is it not as Christ said: "Men love darkness, and will not como to tho light, because their deeds aro evil." You do not find it in a truly spiritual church, but in a church of forms, rites, idle fancies and scruples, not founded on the word of God.
This is true as God made iiirn but David describe th man in his natural state—Jsalm 14:2—" The Lord looked down from Heaven upjn the children of men to see if there were any one that did understand and seek God. They are all gone aside, they all together become pithy there is none that dueth good, no, not one." Psalm 58—3. "The wickeJ are estranged Irom the womb they go astray soon a» they be born, speaking lies.'' Conscious of making this communication too lengthy, I promise both Editor and Diogenes, that it they will excuse this, 1 sbull be most willing to remain silent, and leave this matter with one who is infinite in wisdom, gracious, merciful, and ready to furgi ve. to foster and keep alive this foul monster, superstition, must be devoid of al! those spiritual graces 9nd principles required by the Great Teacher, and be governed, controlled and led by worldly wisdom aud worldly policy. But I will close with only a word touching Diogenes' quotation fromShakspeare's apostrophe of man. Shakspeare may havo had a very high conception of man in a natural state, and a verycorrect idea of his moral condition from his stand-point, but I prefer that knowledge and opinion which conies to us from God alone, who is our maker, and knoweth all our hearts. Tho Psalmist says, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him and the son of man, that Thou visitest him for Thou hast made bim a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour."
