UNION PRATES MEETING.—The

'iUs bedy of the new Court House was well filled yesterday morning from 9 to 10 o'* clock, the hour of prayer. The interest in these meetings is evidently increasing.

A large number of young people were present. Quite a number of the business houses being represented by their clerks— as well as bv members of the firms. This is as it should be vS ti

TH® DELUGE.—A French work recently published, maintains that every ten thousand years the waters of tha sea pass from one pole to the other, submerging and overwhelm! ng in their passage the earth and all its inhabitants. The author states that the deluge occurred 4,000 years ago, and he has sufficient regard for the comfort of the present generation to posU pone the next deluge to a period 6,000 years hence.

WANTED.—A short time since,

Daniel A. Bynum, Treasurer of Greene counVjr, sent a package or seventeen hundred aollars by a friend to Terre Haute, for expressage to the Treasurer of State, there being to. express communication di rect with IJbotnfleld. From some cause or other, the friend concluded not jto express It, managing to lose it somewhere in Terre Hauto. Mr. B. is now in the city, and ffeels confident of the passage of a bill, through the Legislature granting him relief. It seems rather a slim case, but if he is satisfied, we are.—Ind.

This is the $1,700 we advertised as lost last week.

The immortal "J. N." was greet

•d kst evening at the Old Court House with a large and "sympathetic'- audience. Bo fully sustained his reputation as being the greatest satirist, orator ar.d philosopher in the world. In logic, "Wobster and Calhoun were not his superiors in oratory, Clay was not his equal in sarcasm Johif Randolph would have suffered by the contrast in the music of tho voice William Wirt would have been surpassed, and [in the magnificent personal appearance of the orator, Charles Sumner would have been vastly eclipsed. "J. N." lifted the veil, and! relieved his audience from ^the "pressure/' which has been very heavy for soitto time. He has succeeded his theory has been sustained. be ignorant of many of the events and improvements daily going forward.. 0esl» dom has this fact been so fj ed on us as when on yostMBpf we accidentally stepped into the EdiRier Estabishment of Messrs. Burnett & ROM. Some weeks since they moved into the rooms formerly occupied by Messra.^John. Scott A Son. No. 144 and 14^, Main stre«i, And from that time the carpenters, peinters and others have been at work until now there is presented truly a model establishment. A gentleman connected with the leather interest, who has traveled extensively, states that he knows of but two establishments in the Union that sur« pass it. The proprietors are loth to admit this much, and until we see the other establishments we agree with the latter.

This business building is thirty-five by one hundred and forty-two feet—three stories and cellar, and as before remarked, is arranged throughout with a view to the greatest convenience and adaptability.— On the first floor they have the most convenient, tasteful, and so far as using all the room is concerned, tho most economical arrangement for shelf Saddlery Hardware, that ic seems possible to make. Their leather and shoe-finding department, which is also on this floor, is fitted up in a complete manner—a' 'place iJfcr everything and everything in its place."

The Office is also on this floor, and is about two.thirds of the way back from the front it is finished with ash and black walnut and varnished, and is lighted by a skylight. It is large and roomy, has a private office in one end, two large grates forgiving warmth, and is furnished with every thing necessary to make it convenient and pleasant. In fact it is a perfect

gem

loJt .'

of a counting room, and reflects credit on the taste of whoever superintended'its arrangement and fitting up.

In the rear of the Office is a large storeroom for dry hides. This room extends to an alley, making it exceedingly convenient for the receiving and shipping of Hides, SheepSkins and all things of that kind it is also lighted by a skylight.

The second floor is used for the heavier and more bulky of Saddlery Hardware Goods and for duplicates of shoe .findings kept on-the first floor.,^-To show the extensiveness of the stock we will mention that on this floor is a room devoted entire* ly to Whips.

On the 3d floor is their currying and finishing shop, vrhere they seem to have every facility for carrying on that branch of their business. It is warmed by a furnace from below, which is so arranged as to heat almost the entire house with singular economy.

In the cellar, which extends under the entire house, are vats for tanning purposes and a large boiler for generating steam. Here also they cure their hides, store oils and tallow.

They are quite extensively engaged in buying furs, having their agents extending through this State and Illinois.

We lave extended this hasty mention to greater length than we intended when we wrote the heading, and yet we fail to do this model establishment justice. The wealth of Terre Haute, in manufactures and the wholesale trade is too little known even by our own people, and we hope as occasion may allow to speak of other establishments in other branches of trade.

THE AMATEURS.—Just after twelve o'clock yesterday morning we left in the haridl cf our compositors a mention of the amateur: performance of Wednesdays evening/and in putting ihe same in type, the names of the gentlemen taking the two principal characters in the afterpiece —Messrs. L. G. Hager and Ed. Aitken —were accidentally omitted, making it something like the play of Hamlet with' the part of Hamlet omitted. la consequence of this and several minor errors b} request, we reprint the notice in another column. -a*

TBOE ENOUOH.—There is no little circumstance quite so annoying as to knocs at a neighbor's door, and, upon its being opened by some blooming lass with ro£y cheeks and eyes that act upn one's heart like a volley of shot among a fiook of wild ducks, to have a malicious and spiteful little dog rush out of the hall snapping at your shins and yelping at every word you attempt to utter, like one of Mikon's infernal pups sitting before the gates of Topbet. Ifou are disconserted the appearance of the smiling beauty, and you stbnd ducking to the lady and dodging the dog, vainly endeavoring to make known your eiraud, among poorly concealed curses at the yelping cur. You amottier an involuntary the dog," with "a damp day, madam," and have a pleasing consciousness of appearing like a consumate fool generally. jptM#* .Stfewft St ..•

OIL.—Hardly a day passes

but we are called upou to chronicle an accident causcd by the use of explosive oil. Notwithstanding the low price of oil, dealers are in the habit of adulterating it so much, that it oan hardly be used with safety. Men, women and children, are burned to deatnor maimed for life, houses are destroyed and much property is lost from usiog poor oil. In order to tell oil that will explode, it is only necessary to try the following test:

Fill a tumbler threo-fourths full of moderately cool water, then pour half a teaspoonful of oil into it, stir them together then hold a lighted match over the tumbler, and If it takes fire from the vapor before the flames com is incontact with the oil, then it is dangerous, as good oil will not thus ignite and, indeed, will not burn readily When the flaming match is thrown iuto it: while that which has bten much adulterized with benzine will emit a vapor which is nearly as explosive as gunpowder, and the oil will then burn freely.: Kerosene 'ought always to be tested in this way before using.

L. GHager, Edward Aiken, L. F. Muzzy, P. B. O'Reilly and the young ladies kept the: ^udience in an niost uproarious laughter.*

In regard tu»the performance, we have only to say that we doubt much if it could have been better rendered by any cempany of amateurs in- the country, and the patience manifested by the immense audience during the lengthy performance bears testimony to the fact. Amateur* appearing for a charitable purpose, and not for money or ftine, should not be sub* jected to criticism, and we suppose by a teversal ot the rule we would hardly be justified in lavishing upon them individually the high encomiums their performs ance justly merits. In view of the late hour at which we write, the amateurs will excuse us from more particular men* tion of this really excellent entertainment, and we but give the voice of, -all present last evening when we express the hope that many such entertainments will be. given this winter.
