Sill Simpson's Legal Experience. Many years ago, the Legislature of Ten«. nessee passed an act to organize the county McNairy alias Snake. At that time the eountry embraced

in

ustbehind th?m

He then

the limits of

Snake was occupied by a sturdy set of backwoodsman, totally unacqnainted with courts, jail, etc. The county assembled at the appointed-site for the purpose of cutting logs, making boards, etc., to build A court house and jail. The only theme of daily conversation, when the men were assembled,

was

tho court, etc. None of

them had ever seen A court in session, as yet developed. Each one would give what his idea was of a court, etc,

None, however, were entirely satisfactory, until Bill Simpson was called on to give his ideas.

He said he

knew all about

a court—that he had a lawsuit in North Carolina. One of his Eeighbor'Shogs kept coming when he fed his hogs until it got fat. One morning he got so D—D mad that he shot the hog.

He thought it

would not do to throw it away, so he cleaned and salted it. Shortly after, his neighbor and a man came to his house, examined the smoke house, and took him to town and put him in a little office. About three months after that, this man came and took him up to a large-room. A large man sat upon a high bench—A man was sitting at a desk—about a dozen fine dressed men sat in a plara that was paled around. The man put me in a

and the hog, and Bill Simpson, and sometimes Mr. Simpson, but D—D scldon. After they had quit quarreling, the big man talked awhile to twelve men and they went out and staid a short time, and came back and said something to tho man at the desk. The man on the bench said something to the man who put mo in office, and ho took mo out and tied me to a persimmon troe,"and commenced fighting me with a cow-hide, and it made me so D—D mad that I shook all the persimmons off the tree.— Winchester Home Journal.

We copy the following plain and simple directions for the proper care of pianos from a cotemporarv: It should be remembered that the pianoforte is susceptible to the change of temperature, and when turned to one temperature will be out of tune in another. will

let their instruments remain long out of tune, which is a great detriment to thoni, as they are les3 likely to' stand well after having been so left. WE will offer a few hints in reference to the matter. A pianoforte ought justly to bo tuned twice a year, at least. First, when you commence with a lire in the room second, when a fire is discontinued. By following this course, you have the best guarantee that the instrument will remain in tune for tho longest period of time. Again, the instrument shoal 1 not be suffered to remain below concert pitch if it is for years tuned below, it will never stand up to tho pitch witnout a great deal of labor, if, indeed, it ever stand at all. Many, otherwise, benutifui instruments are nearly or quite ruined for want of proper attention to these simple facts.

by the preservation of their

instrument, in which they have invented so much.

FF.W WORDS

the mntter of dress, in the way of boots, balmornt skirts, warm stockings and high necks, we are degenerating in some other matters. The corset is not a nccessary part of a woman's wardrobo and alas when awotnnn does begin to wear corsets she will wear them too small, and will tug at the laces until her breath besomes shoit, and she feels it necessary to refrain from anything like a comfortable meal. We say nothing against a well shaped corset, worn loosely but there lies the difficulty.

A loose corset injures the appearance instead of improving it, and people wear corsets that they may have small waists. All we can say, is, dan't squeeze. Whatever you do. You may have small waists, but you are exposing yourselves lo dozen "misfortunes, which are as bad as a large waist. First, you'll surely have dys pepsia and grow yellow and cross and unhappy secondly, your hands will grow red thirdl}-, your nose fourthly, you wiil bo unable to walk a mile atonce fifthly, dinner

will

be a misery

sixthly, |your shoulder blades will increase in size and altitude seventhly, your eyebrows will grow weak: eighthly, you will break down at thirty or thereabout. and bo a sickly old woman from that time forth. N these truths-do not frighten women from tight corsets, perhaps the information that gentlemen generally do not admire what dress-makers call a "pretty figure' as much so a natural one. may have some influence.

its many false predictions for crinoline has been "doomed," according to report, quite often during the past few years.— Expand or contract as the skirts may, the ladies in this matter are the masters, .and they will probably cling most fondly to crinoline, as an old friend that has long stood by them.
