We desire to call attention to the
interring bill of oar Amateur Theatrical Assoclafipn, which appears in the Amusement Columns-Most of our citizens will remomber their pleasing entertainments if Winters past, and we have no doubt they will do crodit to themselves on this occasion as heretofore. Tho not proceeds bf-these entertainments, of which they intend giving two or three more during the seasdn, are ddnatdd to tho fund for the benefit or widows end, orphans of deceased soldiers, in the hands of the Grand Arnay of tho Republic. No one can deny that fifty'cents spent in this wayis botter, much better spent, than if invested in an ordinary traveling theatre, few of which com* mandone-half the talent of the Amateurs. Therefore we say, patronize home institutions. rL"' fwi.
tl&" The Union Prayer Meeting at the Hall was conducted yesterday by Rev. Mr. Howc of the Congregational Church The attendance was larger than on any previous morning, and the meeting was ono of deep interest. The last meeting will be held this morning, and the subject for prayer is, "For the Catholic Churchy for ail Ministers of the Gospel, for an increase of Holiness, Fidelity and Christian Charity among its members."
These meetings have demonstrated the presence in the churches of this city of a Power and Spirit above that of4sectarianism. Though now the various churches represented there, retiro to their own places of worship, and labor in their own peculiar manner, yet it is made evident that one spirit moves them, and one object is their aim. In this respect, and doubtless in other's too, this series of meetings have done eood.
A column of such humor we should think a good remedy for the blues..

CAUGHT A TARTAR.—On Thursday night a young man, traveling in the interest of the Forth Missouri Railroad, stepped into a Restaurant on the south side of Main street, and encountered a little knot of "top and bottom" gentlemen. He was invited to throw dice for a turkey. He did so and won. Being far away from home and "parients," he liad no use for the turkey, and being something like an elehaht on his1hands, he-put it up-again for nbther raffle,'-and was so unfortunately lucky as to win it again. He was solicited to put the turkey up against a dollar greenback. Did so and won. A larger ,bet Was proposed, when Railroader placed the dollar in his pocket, tucked the turkey junder his arm, said "Good evening, gentlemen, pretty good for an orphan," and departed! r.-r-^—n ..
HUMOROUS.—One of o^r ex ci der the head of "humorous" pu following laughable squiBs:. "Surratt is twenty-six years old." "Lord Broughman has lately hurt his back by a fall, but Is better." "Elizabeth Snell has been indicted in Boston for the murder of her grandchild." "6ameul C. Young has been pensioned by the Virginia Legislature, in consideration of a bad hurt received in the John Brown raid."

ALMOST A J"IRS.—One of our merchants lit his lamp And then turned it down to a taper light expecting to be out a short time, when ho returned he found it had exploded, set the counter on fire, and had it not have been for some persons in a, room above hearing the explosion ,-^ej house would have burned.
It is expected that the meeting will-be large and all will unite to give greater power and efficiency to our own local society. By order of the President. .1 'ilcUUs a' ,-i f'i.
