The World to be Astonished The Rebels are about discussing and maturing a movement which "will astonish the world." Such is the statement of "reliable

Aotoi tcuseing ' 1 1 will MULib tbe t of 'reliable rati

deserters," who, not desiring to be astonished

have come into our lines to escape from

the expected amazement. What will it be? Will they proceed to invade Maryland or

1

Pennsylvania, and to conquer Washington, as they have endeavored to do heretofore,

or will they march right through to Canada,

release the St. Albans raiders and capture

Lake Superior copper mines? Will they

North Carolina, or will they give up the contest? An Alexandria paper says that they

are discussing plans "for the suddent massing of all their available force in Virginia, and

marching into the Northern States with the determination to conquer a peach or die in the attempt." There is nothing like trying, and we think that this effort would certainly end the war, not by conquering a peace, but by the Rebels dying in the attempt. They have tries this plan three times, and they have astonished themselves immeasurably more than they surprised the world. Should they try it again the same fate will attend them. Nothing would be more satisfactory to the loyal States. The only question is about the "Available force." A few thousand men might be drawn from the wreck of Hood's army, and perhaps Hardee, with his fifteen thousand very young and very old Georgians, might be added to the invaders. These would be enough to take into the Northern States, but not enough to bring out of them. And here lies the difficulty The South is exhausted, but the United States turned out at the poll in November las four millions of voters, one-half of whom at least, are fit for military duty, with a reserve of youths between eighteen and twenty-one years of age, that must be formidable Before a peace can be conqueres, the regular army of the United State must be over come, and also the vast population that can be called into service. To talk, therefore, of conquering a peace against such odds is "whistling to keep the courage up," which commences and ends with wind. Almost a Blunder It seems that the military authorities at Washington- including Gen. Grant- were eery near c taltttng treejoodunt blunder regard t. tre'i Thomaa uot long tooe.
