When a considerable distance on our march we overtook a .mall party on foot My attention was attracted by a" little girl, about eight years of ape, who was toddliog over the stones by the way-ide, and I aked her how far she had traVeled. "From Winchester," she aaid. We were then about twenty-;even miles on our march. As the mountains around the Königs Sea abound in chamois, the eagle very naturally reports there, and opportunity is frequentiV afforded of witnessing his tactics, modified by circumstances. The following Account gives An instance of most cunning stratagem; but it a!o fchows how impotent for attacking the eaglo is when bla victim is not entirely exposed. A good aied chamois buck bad got upon a ledge of rock, and was gazing down-ward an 1 about him, as theae animals like to do An engle perceived Lim; but as the bird could not ap proach cloe to the rock on account of his breath of wicg.be resolved to obtain the pruehe had marked as his own in another manner. So he sailed by the chamois on his narrow path as rear as he dare-1 -ome; then again; and .as the animal retreated in order to quit Li perilous position, the eagle, wheeling rounJ in a Soulier circle, met him instantlv, to hem him in and cut adT his retreat. Wj thus rushing pvt within a few fett of Lira, and filling him with terror, he hoped to bewilder the cbiaoij. an! came him to fall over tWe precipice, in which cie he would have but to descend and carry o'X liLs booty. And in fact the chamois, from trepidation probably, in turning a wnir, alipped with ono hind foot over the ledge. He lot his balance, and fed Leidlong over the rock, as the eagle intended that Le should. Hut, after lodging for a short time ou an intervenicg slope, the eirvasa rolled tT, and rims toppling down into the l.-ke. The whole proceeding had been watched by two person in a boat. America is travolin;; for a time on her muicle, and such tratelcrs are dangerous 'At. Iwjuirrr. A I.iiii uf llattle. This expression olten occurs in referiing to the order of troops on the battle fieM. and it i doubtless the opinion of many that the two armies stand in two lines; but it is iiol 0. The army is divided into division-, and there are often great gaps between tho divisions. They aro ported in position, or in commanding places that ii, on hüls. r in woods, or on the banks of streams, in places where they will be able to resist or attack the enemy. The divisions aro usually so placed that they can support one another. You can understand .1 line of battle prett y well by im fining a regiment here on a hill, another down in the valley, a third in a piece of woodi, wi:h artillery and cavalry placed in the bctt positions. If you w ant to make it moro real, when you are out in the fields or pature, with the hills all around, just imagine that the enemy is over yonder bill, with ten thousand men and twenty pieces of artillery. You are a General, and bare an equal number. The enemy will come down that road, spread out into the field, or creep through the woods and attack vou. You can't exactly tell bow many men lie will send on the light, or bow many on the centre, or how many on the left; fo jou must arrange your forces to support each other. Then, to shift if, you are to attack him. You don't know how his troops aro arranged, for he keeps them concealed as well aa ho cau. You don't want many of your men killed, but do want to win a victory. Now there is a chance for you to try your skill ia planning a line of battle. You must place your artillery where it will do the most damage and receive the least from the enemy. You must move your infantry o that they will not be cut off by tho enemy before they get near enough to cut them up In return. You see that it is no smill thiug to he a general. These rtre great responsibilities. .V. V. Trihunr. A S km. is NaroLiix'a Kumar iuom Mo 'ow. On Pecembcr under such intense cold that I could not sit ray borse, but waa forced to run by its side.
