UAstf AT LAlBOtH. KV.J Jeuuarv lath, lt9tj. ( Kditoi Karas'vl Lae recotaü beeaiuformed that worn frOD from the viciaity of Terr Hiuteaud the adjoining counties te Vigo, have visited our camp, and have circulated reporta Injurious to the reputation of the 31st regiment and detrimental to the service. Atnoogat the numerous reporta that we have htvard of, art th. 1st. That our rejinect, owing to the
aumUr akk, ba beta reported at head quarters unfit for duty. 2d. That there are not to exceed one bun dred and fifty ma In the said regiment fit for duty. 3d. That our tuen are dying off by tens with a disease called the Black Tongue. 4ib. That the officers ot the aforesaid reg iment have prorided no hospital accommo dations for the sick, and that they do not vait the sick. The a bore are a few of the charges brought against ua by these Patriate that hare visited us In this hour ot trial. Now, sir, per mit xne, through your columns, to aay thit this dark picture, drawn by these trertAui, I not true. Although we save suffered much, we have tried to meet this afiiction hke soldiers, and we think that thoae who come bre to see and render service to the country and their sick friends, had better rema n on the other side of the Ohio. Their reports are giving aid and contort to the eaeooy, arid not relieving the poor, suffering soldier ot one pain. To the first cht rge I have this to aay, that oo the lt instant 1 was ordered to take a detachment of thl le'meot, and proceed to s small town ten miles south of here, to meet a bodv of the enemy's cavalry, that was renorti to be in the ne chborhjod of said town. I did so, and took from u;no companiea of this regimeot near four hundred live I soldiers surted frtm camp at 6 o clock 1 . II., traveled through bsd roads tlut night te the town, camped, and returned next day, and I have not heard of one of the command beiut ck aince our return Irom the above trip. The other company was on detailed Mrv;. on a teamboat to Evansville. If we are reported not fit for service, why sre we detailed for service? and !a ad litiou to w uiwiw this, on yesterday we naa over sn nuuurru on dres parade. This number did not inelude our cuird. and a cumber oa eitra dutv. As to the second charge, I eay it ia not true. We have e'ght hundred men at this heur able, ready and willing to march to i meet the rebel force. As to the third charge, we have no such a disease in camp, unless there are some who have been visiting us or the same disposition of those that started these reports; if so, I Jtar their tongue hv a drk fat. In answer to the fourth charge, I have to say w have done all In our power to make the sick as comfortable aa we coul d under the circumstances. We built a log bouse, floored douUle. and put stoves in it, wih m ttr&sses for esch soldier. We nave attentive physicians and nurse, aud besides this, the company officers famished rooms in the the town, st their own tipenit, for tbo of thetr companies that were ' . "t on thtn. ail I know that the officer often cot leave ef ab.ence from headerters to visit them, and I knjT they did visit them, for I saw theo there. As for myself and the other field officers, I leave that for the soldiers to say, whether these reports are true or false. And, sir, I am persuaded it thoe gentlemen had one thousand men under their charge, with their good and the interest of the country to care for, and prepare their men to discharge the duties of soldiers, maintain the honor of the great Sute and Government they in part have to represent on the field ol battle, they would be more liW.vl to thou who hare that duty to perform. I admit, u one who has never been In camp, that the sickness that we hve gone throu-h ia discouraging, but mhen we corapire oura with other campaigns, we find the mortality much ies. And now as the dark hour is over, and the soldiers of the 3lit are fast improving, and our line increasing every day, wait until the great army move forward and eee if the 3 1 at is not in the column; anl whiWt we claim no prefer eucii for this regiment over others tb t h ive gone from our State, w desire to be placed on equal footioa; with them, at leat, until we are tried. No fire in the rear, if jou please. Yours truly, JOHN" 03BORN. Vittuogton Items. WasuLforo?. Jan.
