The tiring on both side was almost inces sant for an hour, our artillery doing execution, judging from the lamentable shriek of their wounded. The enemy's battery did comparatively little, the guu beiiitf too much elevated. Our gun effectually sitenced three of theirs. While observations were being made of the enemy's fortifications occupying three more hour, an irregular artillery fire was kept up, occupying the enemv' attention. During this interval the 2oih Ohio and 15th Indiana rendered effectual service, scouting the mountains. Before the close of the reconnoisance, which was most satisfactory, the enemy received heavy reinforcement from their camp near Monterey, making their strength about fifteen thousand. Although this reconnoisance juirtake more of the character of a regular engagement than any preciou battle in Western Virginia, our lo is but ten killed and eleven woui.de!. It is impotable to ascertaiu the enemy V loss; It will not, however fall short of five hundred killed and woundnd, a our artillery did terrible execution. The enemy's wa situated on the slope of the mountain, supported by a number oiguns. We captured thirteen prisoners from Virginia and Arkansas regiment; aNo a lot of cattle and horse. Our troop one and all did nobly. The reconnoisance proved entirely successful, affording information relative to the enemy's strength, which could not be obtained from scout. Gen.
