While observations were being made of the enemy's fortifications occupying three more hour, an irregular artillery fire was kept up, occupying the enemv' attention. During this interval the 2oih Ohio and 15th Indiana rendered effectual service, scouting the mountains. Before the close of the reconnoisance, which was most satisfactory, the enemy received heavy reinforcement from their camp near Monterey, making their strength about fifteen thousand. Although this reconnoisance juirtake more of the character of a regular engagement than any preciou battle in Western Virginia, our lo is but ten killed and eleven woui.de!.
