LANDLORD IN ENGLAND EXPLAINS TO PEOPLE

Lord Bute, Who Holds One Hundred

and Twenty Thousand Acres, Tells About It.

XiONDON", July 5.*—Oot of the Crucible of the great world war the fiery •pirit of freedom has swept over England, and the people, no longer looking upon titled nobility with a feeling of awe, are demanding that tne rich lords and proud peers prove their right of ownership to the great landed •states which were acquired by their ancestors, four and five centuries ago by what is alleged to be doubtful means. Noblemen, with thousands upon thousands of acres, are today embling in their shoes as they spend idle days in their country manors or splendid London town houses.

me

The labor leaders, like Robert Smille, president of the Miners' Federation, hive gone back to the early history of land ownership, and have shown that up to the time of the great war the amount of land under cultivation in Great Britain had been steadily decreasing for generations, because it was held as bunting grounds by the nobility

Lord Bute on the Grill, fair example of this line of investigation is that of the estate of Lord Bute, the third richest peer of Great Britain, who was summoned at the instance of the labor leaders to appear as a witness before the coal commission.

Lord Bute's *eittate consists of 6ns hundred and twenty thousand acres of agricultural land, six splendid country seats, a gorgeous town house in London, miles and miles of land in Palestine, and the entire island of Bute, oft the Scottish coast, which contains 31,161 acres, and he is the absolute ground landlord of the entire great Welsh town of Cardiff. His estate is worth more than 100 million dollars, and his annual income is 14 million dollars.

While Lord Bute was on the witness nt&nd Frank Hodges, secretary of the, ,ers' federation, cross-questioned lordship as to the evidence of the title to his property. "Have you studied tHf? Titstory refuting to the property granted in 15471550 to Sir William Herbert, your anceeter?" asked Mr. Hodges.

His lordship replied that he had not done so, and that the only thing he knew about it was that one of his ancestor's services was the raising of an armyj The particular property herein aliuded lo was the land upon which stands the city of Cardiff, Wales, all of whose docks, railways, warehouses and a big castle, with the outlying collieries and coal mines, are controlled by Lord Bute.

Mr. Hodges thtm rttifrtwJ from wtmt he said was a copy of the actual document which granted the property to Sir William Herbert 372 years ago., wherein it is stated that the grant was made "for quelling rebels in the western part of England." This document had been lost for a couple of centuries, and had been discovered recently in the records office by an employee of the Cardiff corporation, and this corporation still holds the deed.

Mr. Hodges alleged that Sir William Herbert was one of the giiardia!ns of King Edward the Sixth, when latter was between 10 and 14 years and was then on the throne of England. Hodges declared that Sir 4 William Herbert had the boy king grant to him enormous areas of land, which, at that time, were in the possession of the crown, thus using the yL. boy king's name to enrich himself.

Mr. Hodges pointed out that there- ,* fore a minor had transferred to Sir William Herbert one of the greatest !!$.. properties that had ever been known to be granted to any one, and that

SOLICITOR IS HELD.

I

.James T. Colwell, fouthful magazine Solicitor, who has been intruding himself in private homes to sell his magaSine subscriptions and wearing an army uniform, will be held for further investigation and tried Tuesday aft» ernoon on a charge of trespass, according to action taken in City Court Saturday morning. Colwell made two mistakes in his efforts—entering th« homes of Detective Delbert Scott and patrolman Oscar Donham.

... DIES IN EXPLOSION.

i TOUNGSTOWNj O.. July 6.—Harold Straussburge, 31, of Sharon, Pa., was knisi^here last night during a comx* fire works exhibition when an bomb, which failed to explode, m' k him as it descended. Milion *field, 8 William Wilcox, 11, and }eorge Davis, 17, all of Toungstown, were burned by inflamlnable mattei foiling from aerial fireworks. Mrs.

Mary Cavalara, East Toungstown, was shot in the leg by celebrators.

JAILED FOR DISTURBANCE.

A general disturbance of the neigh-

fpt V torhood around Second and Eagle streets Saturday'- morning brought Clara White, colored, into the toils of

Patrolman Jim Carney under a cnarge of disturbing the peace, Folfowing an examination by Captain Van Cleave, •he was sent to Jail.

BLAZE IN TAYL0RVILLE. A flr« Friday evening In a «nall •hed across the river in Taylorville called two lire companies to Second and Poplar streets, where a box was pulled by some person who believed the fire was on tfe* Terre Haute side of the river.
