W E N ESDAY, JULY 2t 1919,

As he deliberately spread the blstmit with Helen's home-made quinje jelly, Bobbie broke the coustraine4 Silence with an impatient, "Wantta a piece of that cake!" "Yes, dear, Aunt Helen will cut it tight now," proceeding to slice a generous wedge from the white flaky tnound. "Are you all readv for cake? Well, cut it up anyway," nervously, to bridge the awkward pause.

Carrie's face was crimson, as Lawrence calmly consumed the biscuit Tm going to have a lemon snap— they look so crisp," again Helen •ought to relieve the tension, and at

It crashed against her plate^ breaking it almost in half. "Oh—oh, I'm so sorry!" in faltering apology. "You might've been a little more careful," snapped .Carrie. "That spoils the whole set. "Oh, is it? You could never match those—that's an imported case." "Well, Carrie, if you're trying to be disagreeable," you're succeeding." Lawrence's mouth was grimly set. *1 disagreeable?***" with -a hateful laugli."Seems to that's your role." •'See here," exploded Warren. "This your idea of a picnic?" "Certainly not mindl Ijawrenpe started out by being disagreeable— when he's like that you can't dp anything with him." "Well, I'm mighty glad to see Lawrence give you a call-down—it's about time. He's put up with a darn..sight more than^ ever would."

Warren's daring speech sent a wrathful flush to his sister's face. Before she could voice a caustic retort, Helen broke in with a nervous, "Doesn't anybody want an olive? No? Well, I do! How'll I get them out?" for the small-mouthed bottle would not admit her fork. "Oh, I know!" as with her hat pin she speared two olives onto her plate. "Well, that's what I call a very dirty trick," announced Carrie, her venom finding expression. "Think any of the rest »f us will eat those olives after you've washed oft your hat pin in the bottle

For a' moment Helen's amazed, flaming indignation held her speechless. "Just lenft tne that hat tln, will you?" requested Lawrence coolly. "I'd like a few of those olives myself."

Helen felt grateful for his championship, though she knew it would only arouse Carrie to lurther vindictireness.

But just then came a wild yell from a near-by bush. As they started up, Bobbie ran howling toward them, both hands clamped over one cheek. "What is it? Mother's darling— what is it?" Carrie drew down the grimy hands exposing a reddened spot. "He's been stungt There it is —-kill it!" *\Jove, he's stirred up a nest!" Warren swatted a buzzing wasp. "Well, this seems to be a hoodooed patty," shrugget^ Lawrence when the angry insects were driven off. "Let's clear up these things and get away." "Great Scott, just look at my trousers," Warren was trying to view the grass stain on the seat of his phite duck trousers. **Wantta 'nother piece of cake,'* sobbed Bobbie, shrewdly taking advantage of his hurt to gorge his insatiable stomach. "It'll make you sick—you've had two pieces," cautioned his mother.

But the renewed howls had to be silenced with another generous wedge. "Guess I'll have another slice, too," grinned Lawrence. "Helen, the only redeeming feature about this party is your eats.**

An unfortunate remark, for it brought back all Carrie's animosity. "I'm sorry yott didn't like my luncheon." frigidly. "Possibly you'll like it better for supper." it's all you'll get f" "Oh, is it?" snorted Warren. "Well, here's where the squirrels gejt a •donation!" i

Vigorously sweeping up the remains of Carrie's delicatessen delicacies, he fiuiifc them far out into the bushes.
