STROUSE HASN'T HEARD

HIS ELIMINATION

In Pact, Increasing Business At Revtnue Office Would Seem to Demand Its Continuance.

k

"Front present fodications the month of July will be the busiest ever known about the revenues collector's office for this district, except perhaps --the month of March last," said Chief

Deputy George R. Spfcncer. "This much the people of Terre Haute may rest assured of. The local Office' will always be maintained no matter what changes Commlssfoner Roper may decide upon in the interest of economy and the centralization of effort. There are now about 60 persona in the employ of this revenue district and all are working overtime in taking care of the various special t,axes growing largely out of the war. There will be no cessation in activities either, so far as I can see. Some of the men now working in Terre Haute may, later on, be transferred to other cities in the district, though w* have received no definite word from headquarters. In view of

From statements made by Commissioner Roper it Is inferred that Collector St rouse will be one of th'e Indiana officials to lose out in the reorganization plans suggested by Commissioner Roper, but his resignation has not yet been called for and there is no certainty It will be. At any rate the deputies now employed wiil b» retained for the simple reason there will be plenty of work for them to attend to with or /without prohibition.

NEW YORK, July 2.—Excepting rails, which manifested increased heaviness, a buoyant tone marked the initial dealings on the stock exchange today. Yesterday's favorites, namely food and tobacco shares, and also motor accessories, were again to the fore with gains of 1 to 2 points, thtse in some instances being substantially increased before the end of the first half hour. Steels, shippings, equipments and some of the oils advanced, U. S. steel recording its best quotation since the early part of June.

Great Band Leader "Was Once a Stone Cutter Here. TSfthumlr Kryl, the Bohemian band leader, whose'band plays here at Chautauqua, lived here at one time. He was engaged in carving the eagles and flags in the frieze over the federal building doorsj being, a stone cutter. He played his cornet at noon during the lunch hour, and the late Prof. Jacob Breinig heard him one day. He engaged Kryl for the Ringgold band here, and that was his start in a musical way. Kryl has sinee become a world famous leader, and nearly as famous as a sculptor.
