"Nora, bring back the wine glasses -—Quick!" whispered Helen. "And warm up his soup! Get down," brushing Pussy Purr-Mew from his chair. Then as they came in, she tried to look at ease and unconcerned.

Mr." Jordan was short, Uiln. and slightly bald. "Sorry to be lata, Mrs. Curtis," when he was introduced. "Oh, not at all," murmured Helen, vaguely.

Apparently golf had given hfm an appetite, for he quickly dispatched his soup. "No* thank yoa,-non®

Nora started to fill his wine glass. "What?" asked Warren with concern. "No claret? Rather h&va Scotch—and the vichy.* "No—no, nothing at atl, I've been cutting it out lately. He imports most of his goods— the war's hit him hard."

Through the rest of the dinner they talked "shop," and Helen was completely- ignored. Mr. Jordan did not even glance toward her. That he was a bachedor, she knew. Perhaps that accounted for his scant courtesy. "Hello, it's a cat!" as he raised the cloth and glanced under the table. "Thought I felt something." "That's Pussy Purr-Mew," Helen informed nim, proudly. "Well, I can't say that I'm very keen on cats. Like dogs better." Then turning to Warren: "Remember that collie I used to have?"
