BEFORE WE

COME TO IT.

There Is being much said about "the period of readjustment" and the great task that will ,confront us after the war. A statement in the Tribune yesterday said that France has 450,000 women in her munition factories, that Italy has filled the places made vacant by her fighting sons with her loyal women, that Great Britain's industries are very largely dependent upon her working daughters and that in our own country millions Of women are engaged in Self-supporting occupations.

This may be ascribed to the exigencies of war, but that explanation doesn't entirely govern the progress of the sex in the far east. In Japan, for instance, it is stated that fully half the factory workers are women, and that the Japanese government employs more than 12,000. women in a single department. The toddling and mincing girls of "The Mikado" seem to have toddled out of existence. Over in Chin*, too, the government is well under way. The Chinese women are

charge or nose running relieves sick headache, dullness, feverishness, sore throat, sneezing, soreness and stiffness. "Pape' Cold Compound" is the quickest, surest relief known and costs only a few cents at drug stores. It acts without assistance, tastes nice, and causes no inconvenience. Don't accept a substitute. tramping over traditions on the road to factory and office. In India the women are now doing the bulk of the work In the cotton mills—there are 22,000 of them in Bombay alone.

It seem* to be a fact that these drafts upon the industrial energy of womankind are not due alone to war conditions, nor m^de necessary through war demands The bugbear of readjustment of present industrial conditions may not be as formidable as it has appeared. It does not prevent the employment of women in new occupations in far-away nations that have been only slightly touched by the stress of the great war. Perhaps, when the time comes—the momentous after-the-war time—it will be found that the dreaded industrial readjustment has adjusted itself.

WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD.

It must be admitted "that the war trade board of Canada is a daring organization, whatever else be said of it. It has set out to standardize the styles and qualities and prices of wearing appareL. It may be possible to dictate qualities and cost, but even a war board might well shrink from gayety with that intangible y*t universal quality we call style.

An American woman of advanced literary distinction devoted considerable magaslne space recently to an analysis of style, Its beginnings. Its demands, its vagaries. She concluded that it was the most mysterious and most powerful of human Influences, absolutely ttncontrollabl# and altogether Inexplicable.

In defiance of this tfroffessfbftal feminine conclusion the Canadian war trade board apparently proposes to set the style in headgear, In shoes, In skirts, in all the ordinary details of wearing apparel. In commenting on this presumption the Toronto Globe pertinently says: "The board will need all Its courage and llplomacy. Fashion has yielded neither to ridicule nor reason* She has laughtfd at the high cost of living. She reigns in war as in peace."

The first fashion budget of ths war board is pretty certain tp draw heavily on Canadian Interest, The official length of a feather, the brevity of a skirt, the shape of a sleeve, the clpcks of a stocking, the standard of spats, the turn of a tunic, the hang of a coating, .would seem to be matters of too grave import to be intrusted to a mixed body of military and civic advisers of great state. The war trade board of Canada, after it has heard from the country, may be more inclined than ever to believe what Sherman said of war!

The soldiers in our camps are going to be awfully sore if the war is called off before they get a chance to shoot a single Hun.

The Italian army could go faster in pursuit of the Austrians If all the Italian soldiers were provided with automobiles.

The allies fcave not only made breaches in the Hindenburg line, but have cut the suspender buttons off.

Hungary seems to bo chopped tip into goulash, and Austria to a wienerschnltzel.

Austria-Hungary's now name.might be The Disunited States.

HOW A SALESMAN SUFFERED. R. J. Porter, Sterling,' CoL, writes "For six months I suffered with a painful weak back. As a traveling salesman I had to stoop frequently to pick up my grips, which I grew to dread as the pain when I straightened up was awful. Numerous remedies failed to reach my case. I was induced to,try Foley Kidney Pills. Relief was immediate. Say, they are great! Any one afflicted as I was should try a bottle or two of Foley Kidney Pills." Good for pain in the back, rheumatic pains, aching joints, sore muscles. Sold everywhere.—Advertisement.

OU'VE got it—every human being is born with it—your large intestine, or colon. It is a large tube—reservoir or sewer—intended to collect waste matter and remove it from the body.

Plug it up with waste, neglept it, and you're sick on your feet. The waste matter stagnates, undergoes decay, fermentation and germ action. Dangerous poisons are produced, that can easily be absorbed and carried all over the body.

BEADING A HORSE'S CHARACTER Cavalry officers learn to read a horse's character from its color. Bright chestnuts and light bays are highspirited, but nervous and delicate. Dark chestnuts and glossy blacks are liardy and good-tempered. Rich bays liave great Bpirit, but are teachable. Dark and iron grays are hardy and sound, while light grays are the opposite. Roans are the hardiest and best working of all, even-tempered, easi-ht to train, taking kindly to everything. Rusty blacks are stubborn. A horse •w ith one white stocking is a bad one
