The Married Life

The next number was a group of Amateur tumblers, and Helen less intcrested, became conscious of her discomfort, hear dangling feet and the narrow board seat.

Then she felt the' woman behind pushing with her knees. With a re,s*ntful squirm Helen Tf^aned back.

The hostile knees pressed harder. Dear, that woman behind us," in an tadignant undertone. "Keeps punching v. me. ii "What do you expect?" fchrugged

Warren. "Packed in like sardines." As the offending knees continued to bear heavily against her back, Helen threw an indignant glance over her shoulder. It was a woman of about

forty, expensively dressed, but with a querulous, assertive face. The very air was charged with her antagonism. Helen sat stiffly, combatively upright, determined to dislodge the boring knees. "Madam 7*^ the woman's Voice was said, "you're shoving me off my seat."

The color flamed through Helen's face, as she pressed against Warren with an excited, whispered, "Oh, how indolent! I was only sitting up straight' Say something to her! Tell her to taktf her feet off our bench!" "That's what you're up against in this bunch." with exasperating unconctrn. "Had "nough? Want to get out?"

There's no question of women's right to enter war activities—to take the place of the men now at the front. In-, deed they would seem to have many points of superiority over men in some of the industrial fields which they are now entering*. But to take men's burdens the women must be strong—must have iron gerves and good blood. So many women these days are frail, nervous, borne down by the pains and aches peculiar to their sex. A -sex tonic and nerve builder is needed, such as Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. An affection confined' to women must have its cause in the womanly nature. There is no doubt that a diseased condition of the delicate womanly organs, is in general responsible for feminine nervousness and an undermined constitution, i The use of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription makes women happy by making them healthy. There are no more crying spells, "Favorite Prescription" is an herbal tonic for female weakness. It makes weak women strong.

Favorite Prescription has been for nearly 50 years the

ipost favorably known herbal tonic for women. Ask your neighbors!

The "Prescription" is sold in tablet or liquid form. Send ten cents to Dr. Pierce, Invalids' Hotel, Buffalo, N. Y., for large trial package. Qruggists sell the tablets in 60-cent packages. 4

Men and women are many times tempted to ask their family physician questions on delic%te matters. Such questions of sex are answered by the "Medical Adviser." "No, of course not," flared Helen. "We have our seats.- Why should we let an insolent, ill-bread woman drtve ua out?"

Although her gatee was on the ring, Helen was too thoroughly incensed to bze conscious of what she saw. She was atlngle with concentrated hatred for the woman back of her. "That any one should be so rede and ill-bred at a benefit!" she tried to say it loud enough for the woman to hear.

Warren's attention was on a tumbling clown, but Helen heard the woman's sneering, retaliating oorament to her companion about "some people" being "so common." "Dear, I can't stand it any longer! Aren't there any other seats?" "We'll stay right where we are," scowled Warren, "or go home! I'm not going to flounder., around and disturb everybody else."

Every second Helen was co&acloua of the hateful knees which now bored into her with a triumphant, gloating hostility." Every time she leaned back they gave her a vicious dig. Her throat ached with rage. The primitive fighting instinct was aroused.

Unse^ingly she gazed at the ring. Why could she not turn and demand in an icy tone, "Madam, 1 will fttankyou to take your feet off my seat?" She rehearsed this speech, but somehow could not bring herself to say It.

She must hot let it spoil her evening! She tried to watch the dexteroas Japanese jugglers, but every tensely strung nerve was conscious of the woman back of her.

At last, amid the final dashing of the- band, they rose from their cramped sea ts. Helen struggled to her feet with a purposely loud* "Oh, I'm so glad ifs ow. didn't think any one could be so mde!" turning for a last furious glare at the woman behind them, who returned her gaze with insolent hauteur. "You always manage to get into a rrw," growled Warren, as they eSmbed down over the rough boards. "Confound it, my foot's asleep!" "Why I didn't say a wordT TopJieani what she said to me! Oh, she was the most insolent—" "Hello, here's Wilson," Wamm was shaking hands with a tall, smoothfaced man. Then turning to Helen, want Von to meet Mrsi. Curtis."

v

"Well, What'd you think at the show?" Mr. Wilson beamed genially. "Oh, 1 enjoyed it so much," effused Helen untruthfully, "Had a good crowd," was Warren's guarded comment "Yes, we got here late and couldn't get three seats together—so Mrs. Wilson's with her sister. We'd better wait for them here."

Helen, tired and achy from the uncomfortable bench, almost dreaded going out with the Wilsons for supper, i-'he wondered what Mrs. Wilson would be like, and if it would be bard to talk to her. "Oh, there they are!" Mr. Wilson's face lit up. "Mr. Curtis, this is Mrs. Wilson, and MrR. Wilson's lister Taylor, Mrs. Curtis

Helen's formal smile stiffened inio lines of horror as she found herself being introduced to the woman who had sat back of her!
