he has received. The smaller counties have reported to Van Nuys that they have nearly all of their votes registered. Some of the cities, however, are backward. The outlook is not bright for a large registration in Lake county, where there are thousands of foreigners. The republicans have been counting strongly on this vote.
A heavy registration in Indianapolis will be more favorable to the demooats than to the republicans. The laboring men are very friendly to the democrats this time, as the republian workers who have been registering the factory employes can testify. Van N ivs has received some very encour-

agin reports this week from the industrial centers, but an enormous amount of work confronts both the siaie committees and it is doubtful whether ''ither side will register 80 per cent of its, vote.
A big drive will be made next week to register the Indiana soldiers at Camp Taylor, Camp Sherman, Camp Shelby, Camp Custer and other cantonments. More than a hundred men will represent the state in this registration. Each party will appoint half of the men to visit the cantonments. There are practically 100,000 Indiana boys in the service. If 20,000 of them vote under the absent voters' law it will be surprising. The troops are being rushed to K"rance in such large numbers that there is no certainty that any of the Indiana boys who were !n training two or three weeks ago will be here on election day.
Governor's Condition.
While Governor Goodrich's injuries are very severe, he is now out of danger. He is resting as comfortably as could be expected under the circumstances. A long time is required for a broken hip to heal. The governor will hav^ to lie in a cast for several weeks, and after that. !f his hip knits properly, several more weeks will be required to strengthen him eo that he can get around on crutches. The broken collar bone has healed nicely, and the slight fracture in the skttii is no

longer alarming. But for the broken hip the governor might be out wrtnm a short time.
He will transact much of his official business from the hospital. There are no pressing matters of state on hand at this time. He probably will not appear at any of the meetings this I y^ap However,_he will write a keynote speech on state issues, and it [will be read by someone to be selected by the state organization within the next few days. The speech probably will not be delivered until the conclusion of the Liberty Loan drive.
The governor will be in the campaign. although he will be out of it physically. He can dictate his speeches to a stenographer and they can be read at the various meetings. The entire state will rejoice that the governor's injuries are no worse and that he is recovering.
Boost Liberty Loan.
The two state committees are to be commended for the co-operation they are giving the Liberty Loan organization. Indiana leads in the effort of the party organizations to promote the sale of bonds. John Edwards, chairman of the speakers bureau at the republican headquarters, is arranging for many republicans to speak in behalf of the Liberty Loan drive.
Homer Jackson, chairman of the democratic speakers' bureau. Is making ip a list of speakers to represent his

party. Chairman Van Nuys has asked the members of the county organizations to do whatever they can to promote the sale of bonds. A similar re-' quest has been made of the republican committees by Chairman Edmund Wasmuth. So, in a sense, politics will be adjourned while the bond sales are being conducted.
Will Wade of Indianapolis, chairman of the Liberty Loan organization in Indiana, says that a very good plan for the sale of the bonds is being Worked out. Some counties are so well organized that they expect to take their quota in one day. There is no doubt that the drive will be conducted with ft better organization this time than ever before.
Speakers Off Stump.
Unless congress takes a recess in October, there will be few speakers of note participating in the Indiana campaign. The members of the Indiana delegation have been sticking close to Washington, and it is likely that few congressmen will come home to make speeches. The two state committees are uncertain about the speaking campaign. The injury of Governor Goodrich is a distinct loss to the republicans, as he was to have been their headliner. However, Chairman Will Hays is relied upon bv the republicans for their notable speakers. He can get them if anyone can. Hays, in fact, is

sional campaign. He is working at the Job day and night. He has taken over rriost of the work that heretofore has fallen to the congressional campaign committees. The outcome of the congressional campaigns will mean a great deal to Hays. He is said to be ambitious to become the national chairman in 1920. He has been touted as the "boy wonder" and as the greatest haxmonizer the republicans have ever had.
In justice to Hays, his critics should admit that he has done very good work for his party. They may criticise his methods, but he gets results—and no one can accuse him of being lazy or indifferent.
Wilson's Visit.
Some of t,he republican leaders are fretting over the reports that President Wilson "may deliver two or three speeches in Indiana in behalf of the Liberty Loan drive. They concede reluctantly that he would arouse a great deal of enthusiasm, and they cannot deny that the people would like to see their president during the war. Wliat is eating them is the fear that the presence of the president in Indiana prior to the election might arouse such a patriotic fervor in his behalf that his party would sweep the state in the November election.
People generally are hoping that the president will come to Indiana this fall to talk to them about the war. It

may be taken for granted that no one will understand the proprieties of the occasion better than the president, and that he will not talk politics at his meeting.
