At The Movies

BY M14IIE O'BRIEN.

The America*.

Walker Whiteside and Valentine Grant, who were so successful a^s coetars in the tllm proluction of 7~ingwell's, "Tlie Melting I'oi." are togetlier again after three years devoted to the regulation drama, in a screen production of Frederic Arnold Kumrner's tragic tale of the period. "The Belgian," which is now being shown at the American.

Both of these distinguished players are Mooslers, Mr. Whiteside being a native of lxigausport and Miss (Jrant hailing from Lafayette. Mr. Whitetside, who was known as the boy Hamlet for many years, though he retired from the stage for a time after ins exploitation as a sort of infant prodigy, was one. of the few of the Shakespearean actors with courage enough to cling to the classic drama during the lean years that came jnst before the craze for pictures was developing. Occasionally, however, he produced a new play and pome of his productions were !in inri u as well as artistic successes, notably "The Melting Pot.,'" "The Magic Melody" and "The Typhoon." He was finally coaxed into pictures and for his initial appearance in the movies "The Melting Pot" was chosen. As all picture fan: know, this film was exhibited at advanced prices of admission to capacity audiences for a time. But Mr. Whiteside was not content, to remain in pictures, although the brief experience had been very profitable. The manuscript of a regular drama appealed to him. and away he went for another shot at the "legit." Mr. Kumrner's story of the Belgian patriots made a deep fmpression upon Mr. Whiteside,' however. and when Sidney ulcott asked him to appear in a big screen production of It he was ready to make the sacrifice, as he regarded it.

The success of "The Belgian" nay keep our best Hamlet ofT the regular stage for a while, and that's a pity, for no actor of the time can read lines more eloquently than this same Logansport player. "The Belgian" is a war plav to a certain extent, but the war is incidental to the love storv of the ftnher-man-sculptor and the flshcrmaiden both of whom are the victims of Cerman spies. Th« young Belgian fisherman goes to Paris to enter a sculptor's studio and becomes infatuated with a countess who is on the kaiser's payroll. When war breaks out the voung fisherman joins the colors and is apparently blinded in battle. It is the Belgian fishermatd that nurses him though he thinks only of the countess'. With eyesight finally restored, the truth is brought home to him in a very impressive way. He realizes his countess is a spy and is glad of the opportunity that conies to him to save the life of his Belgian sweetheart.

Orphean.

George M. Cohan as an ardent advocate of prohibition at a time whan the extremists of the dry element appear to be having matters pretty much their own way in this country, may not appeal to the admirers of the most American of actor-piayrights. Mr. Cohan in pictures as 1n tho drama, is sure to wave tho flag that stands for liberty at some stage of the proceedings and it is something of a shock to see him lining up wiih those whose one aim these days appears to be to kill ofr the demon rum rather than the Hun, as he «°^J

That theatergoers realize there's a vast difference in the quality of pictures, that a view of some of them is worth the regular price of admission charged for first-class shows, while others are bunkedorious at any price, is demonstrated whenever something unusual in the way of a film comes along.

Now, "Salome" at 75 cents high is drawing splendid audiences at the Grand, not liecause Theda Bara dances in the "almost altogether" and shows her bare legs frequently, but because the production in Its entirety is worth a two hours' survey even in these busytimes.

In the Fot production we get all of the facts regarding "Salome," her onesided flirtation with John the Baptist and of the various murders she incites. It is a carefully and expensively made production and a tribute to the genius of Earl Sibley, the Terre Hante bov, who designed the settings and even the costumes. The palaces and chariots were built by expert mechanics that were under the dirp-etion of Terre Hauteans, Mr. Sibley having on his staff Joe Reynolds, who Is one of the pillars in Herod's palace, and Bill Kuliss.

We are told that: It took an army of S00 men to build the city of Jerusalem. More than 20 tons of paint were used on the .sets and scenery. Five hundred thousand feet of lumber was put Into construction—enough to build a good-sl7.ed town. Two hundred thousand yards of burlap went into the covering of the buildings. Nearly an entire menagerie was required for local color: 44 camels. 2.500 horses. 25 donkeys. 20 elephants, goats, sheep, bullocks, ixen, dogs, ca'ts, parrots, doves and peacocks. Special boilers were installed for the making of steam and light effects. One hundred sculptors worked for a month on the various sets. Ten thousand costumes were made for the players by the William Kox costume department at Hollywood, Cal.

During the progress of their sidewalk conversation at the Hippodrome. Mr. Latour asks Miss Gold how to reach the nearest hospital. '*Run down the street veiling hurrah for the kaiper," is the answer.

The old method of getting to a hospital in a hurry aa explained by the vaudevillians. was to butt in on an Irish convention with a suggestion that the 12th of July instead of the 17th of March be made Irish dav. But times have changed. 'Tis the people of the north who now applaud the loudest when the orchestra strikes up Iixie. The present bill at the Hip which Includes Harry Tate's English sature on joy riding in automobiles holds over Sunday. The owners of pleasure-going craft will find consolation in the troubles of the joriders as illustrated by Mr. Tate and his associates. v "The French Frolics." one of the recognized wheel burlesque shows comes to the Grand Sunday with the old electric runway restored. I^ena Daley and Harry (Hello Jake) Fields are still the stars of the aggregation.
