luncheon, 2 slices for dinner, 6 slices for guests, each, 3 slices. With a shrinkmg: dread of the girl's inflammable temper, Helen took this out to the kitchen. "Nora, I want to spoafc to vo« about the bread. We've been using three large loaves every two days. We don't eat it—you cut it up and let it get stale. Just look in'there!"
Opening the bread-box Helen exposed a dozen or mors- slices in various stages of dryness. "Now, Nora, there's no excuse for that! Here's almost a loaf—wasted!" "I can use it for bread pudflin.' sullenly, but without the voluble arguments Helen had dreaded. "We don't like bread pudding." quietly **Now hereafter cut up only what w« need. up by the bread-box. If you follow this, unless we hav« company, one large loaf a day ought to be plenty."
Bneouragred by Nora's unexpected meekness, Helen approached her next hurdle, v "And I want to meak about the fee. Tou must keep the ice-box closed. Tea, I see it's closed now, but it very rarely is. Our ice bills are much too hiph. Try to be more careful, won't you Nora?"
Nora's "Yes, ma'am,"1 was an Indistinct mumble, "Now today you clean the dining room and hall—and the hall closet, l^ast j^nonth you forgot ,the closet— so give it an extra good cleaning."
As Helen, with an unwonted sen«« of triumph was leaving the kitchen, the door hell rang. It was the superintendent with the plumber. "Why, I thought you'd forgotten about that shower," slie hogan coldly. "It's been almost two weeks "Yes, I know, Mrs. Curtis," apologetically. "But our house plumber is sick and it's almost impossible to get any outsidfe help. There's a leak in Mrs. Hoffman's apartment—we've had the hot water in her pantry cut off since Wednesday, and I can't get it fixed."
At this Helen thawed. Mrs. Hoffman was »the dne who was always making the most complaints, and who she thought received the best Service.

The woman who answered was most courteous. She would 6end for the waist, and if they could not remove the spots—there would be no charge.
Helen had hardly hung up the receiver when Nora came in with the mail. "Spring Farm Dairy" was the heading on one of the envelopes. "Dear Madam:—We regret the errors in your last month's bill. We trust you will appreciate the difficulty of getting competent delivery men juat now, and that we are doing all in our power to give you satisfactory service. "We enclose with this the corrected bin and hope we may continue to serve you. "Very truly yours."
As she laid down the letter, Helen caught a glimpse of herself in the mantel mirror. How tired and dragged she looked, with dark shadows under her eyes—the lines that always come after a sleepless night.
She thought of the things that had kept her awake. In the night, they had assumed an importance out' of all proportion. With the morning one by one they had righted themselves.

The plumber at work in the bath room, Helen turned to the telephone. She would call up the cleaner's about that waist right now. Two of her worries vanquished, with added assurance she assailed the third.

That always had been her failing— to magnify petty vexations. She thought of a homely story her Uncle Frank used to tell. The story of an old man. who, on his death bed, told his sons that he had spentjthe greater part of his life worrying over misfortune— most of which "never happened."*
The proportion held true with her— moat of them "never happened"! Nine troubles out of ten righted themselves in a few days—and the tenth "came right" in time. So why—why spend so much of ber time, her strength and vitality, in futile, wasting worry?
