NEWS OP THE STOCK MARKET

NEW YORK, Sept. 4.—Stocks were Arm at the opening of today s market, but developed moderate reactionarytendencies before the end of the first half hour as a result of bearish aggressions. Rails were again the chief sustaining effect, especially the continental group, which rose larse fractions. United States Steel was virtually unchanged on its initial offering of 6.000 shares, but soon yielded half a point. Baldwin Ijooomottve, Studebaker and the Petroleums were especially strong, Texas company gaining three points.

CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE.

CHICAGO. Sept. 4.—Forecast of frost in Wisoonsin gave some appearance of strength at times today to the corn market.

Opening prices, which varied from urn-hanged figures to He ofT, with September $1.54S. to $1.54 =4 and October, $1.56^i to $1.571,4, were followed by a material upturn all around, out then by declines, that in the September and October deliveries reached well below yesterday's flnish. Oats showed firmness owtng to an absence of telling pressure. After opening off to -Sic up with October 72the market hardened, but later reacted somewhat.

Provisions were dull and irregular.
