TEN-MILE LIMIT.
The order received by Captain Klshler, forbidding the conduct of an illegal resort. Within ten miles of Camp Jlose will probably hasten a consummation on which the Committee of Twenty has been working here. Since the notice comes as a federal order, and the federal district officials and federal district' court will have the consideration of guch violations as occur, U can be assumed that its observance will be correspondingly complete. The recent "dope raids" here by the federal officials cleaned out an rlement which has been harbored here and which, doubtless, has been the feource of much law violation.
This fresh determination of Uncle tiara to clean up Terre Haute will be welcomed by .the citizens, It will astuiredly promote health and discipline jflimong the soldiers in camp here, and
Hill be conducive to as admirable conditions among the civilians.
THE RULING PASSION.

explain officials of the local Red Cross, "by a tendency on the part of auxiliary members to wear uniforms of original design. This Is entirely contrary to the democratic spirit of Red Cross.
Here is one reason why the ruling was mader In the teaching center of* a midwest city the eleven phairmen agreed to adopt a self-designed, copyrighted linen street dress. The uniform cost $30 apiece. One woman didn't have the wherewithal. She was desperately unhappy.
She blamed her "husband for not having made money. He borrowed a friend's hard earned dollars and the patriotic worker worked late into the night to make the garments herself.
All this to humor the inborn yearning- for something' different which has prevailed since the first creator of fashions designed the flg leaf in the far famed garden of Eden. •Imported models ended\ with the great invasion of khaki, but the passion of exclusiveness in feminine apparel is still leading astray many potentially war-winning dollars.
The American Red Cross has branded this undemocratic How will any true American regard women who In war time indulge thia extravagant tendency!
BETTER ROADS.
The ptiWIc win appreciate the effortsof the Terre Haute Automobile club in its endeavors to pave the sections of the roads leading Into the city from the north. Automobila owners, and In fact operators of all kinds of vehicles, will rejoice over the news that the club has succeeded in having waived the war-tira6 objections to this work, and that Lafayette avenue and Seventh street are to be paved. While it is unfortunate that Thirteenth street is not included In the order, nearly all conceding the need of pavement there as great as on Lafayette avenue and Seventh street, but thia may be reached later.
The condition of these streets has been a detriment to Terre Haute. Motor visitors have encountered these roads and vowed to avoid Terre Haute as long as there was no relief. They have been the pride and Joy of the repair man and a source of suspicion against the character of the best motor vehicle ever made. They are of such general traffic that It is really a war aid to have them paved, and facilitate such travel as is compelled to use them.
The Automobile club has faithfully advanced this point, and has brought the County Council of Defense around to this view of the matter. For which the club will have the profound gratitude of traffic in general.
A DIFFERENT TUNE.
Director General of Railroads McAdoo has struck a body blow at those who hope to see governmental administration of the nation's rail system prove a failure. He has made plain that governmental operation is not to be made a scapegoat and that railroad employes, now servants of the United States, must show to those with whom they deal the same courtesy and the same attentiveness which marked their services in the days of corporation "control

sists that the "public be damned** policy which was fof so long the curse of American railroads shall be discontinued forthwith. The people of the United States will welcome this action.
Railroad employes everywhere have recently been given large wage Increases, and the government has allowed liberal appropriations to meet increased operating costs. The people have not complained. They have accepted their new burdens cheerfully, with ready understanding of the war time necessities which brought about the change.
The American people know they cannot expect the service to which they were accustomed, and they do not ask It They ask, and expect, only tha customary courtesy. Unless they receive it, without persistent Insinuation that the government is to blame there cannot but arise n menacing situation due to a lack of confidence in the efficiency of the government and the loyalty of the railroad workers.
In a time when every national effort should be directed to the obtaining of the maximum result in service and efficiency there is no room for petty machinations. Director McAdoo's warning to the men who work under his orders is particularly timely. One must regret the condition which made it necessary.

While Venus and Neptune are in benefic aspect today Jupiter is adverse. It is a rather doubtful day.
Care should be taken in all social as well as business affairs. It is held to be an unlucky rule under which to deal with women.
There Is a»sinister sign for weddings today, since Neptune seems to presage deceit and disillusionment.
Milliners and modistes come under a sway making for great business foresight as the stars appear to indicate new custom* or fashions that discourage extravagance in dress.
A tendency toward standardization in women's clothing is discerned by the seers who counsel thrift and economy.
