00 WOMEN IN JAIL KNIT? HARDLY

_____

CiUTwed From Page On*.

«owa t* the river, but a short distance away, in the evening. Whea there are women "trusties" in the jail, she takes them with her.

Vow te the women's section of the Jail! The eells and "run-around* long passageway next the windows outside the cells) were shut off from the rest ol the jail by a heavy iron door. Mrs. Robinson unlocked it and it swung heavily, solemnly, and even sternly open. We found two young women sitting in the ffont of the "run-around,"* evidently taking a sun bath. was introduced to both girls—one white, the other, colored. Sylvia, the white girl,

had Quite a fascinating appearance. Her distinctly auburn hair and big blue eyes that looked perfectly frank at us despite her display of bare feet and ankles (to the extreme extent that present day skirt length fashion permits) were such that could not fail to attract. She acknowledged the introduction as pleasantly as if she had been comfortably situated in her own home. "This fa npt r»in-around." she playfully disputed when Mrs. Robinson named the space for me. "It is our veranda. One could call it a sun parlor, too!** And then there quickly fol-^ lowed from her, "Oh, gee, I wish it was time to ea.t ag*ia: I'm so hungry." ¥5yhria, often known as Marie, has a two-husband record and has now landed behind Jail bars on a charge of adultery. The outcome of her case did not seem to worry her.

Artie, the colored girl, was quiet, almost to the point of sullenness. She was in process—a very slow one— of making her toilet. She gazed at

There is more tb Toric lenses than most people think. As you can see from the illustration, Tories allow a greater range of vision on account of their curved surface. Then, too, you will be aggreeably surprised how much better you will look wearing Tories.

herself in a hand mirror, looking at various facial defects. She was negligee, very.- But as I said before, she was making her toilet. Artie was hourly expecting release cm bond on a grand larceny charge.

Lying on the iron, springlesa bed, wrapped around and around in a sheet, we found another Sylvia. Mrs. Robinson thought the girl was ill a.nd so said, but the girl offered another solution in these words: "Sick"? I washed all my elothes and had to go to bed while they dry!"

Sylvia n had heard me mention knitting and said that she'd love to if she had the time in which to do it she said, however, that someone would have to teach her first. "I have crocheted some," she informed me. "But I didn't have a lot of time for that. I have worked in aristocratic homes and have been kept too busy most of the time for anything. But I should like to knit for the soldiers."

Sylvia is in jail without any formal charge while a job is being found for her. Her parents do not live in Terre Haute.

Cheerfully, the girls bade me goodbye as I passed out the heavy door, from which I followed the matron to the first floor again. Here I saw Jennie, the trusty. Jennie helps in the kitchen and in the laundry and in fact, all around wherever there is work to do. She never uttered a word and Mrs. Robinson told me that her silence was her usual manner. "Jennie is a good woman," the matron said. "She is an exoellpn? worker and can be trusted to the fullest extent, Her only failing is liquor. She hax been in any number of times on that charge." "We passed out onto a back porch and I heard words of "Over There" floating down quite musically and clearly, as well as loudly from above.

It was Sylvia, the two-husband girl, who has not yet passed her 21st birthday entertaining the other inmates of her section, as well as any others who chanced to be within hearing distance of her voice. "She must be happy,™ I remarked to the matron. "Happy!" she said. "TThy, this Is home to most of the girls who come here!" Then it occurred to me that most of the girls whose irregular paths lead to the Vigo county jail—or any other Jail for that matter—are girls who have never known the protection and the Joys of a real home. That Is why they are there. Some day we shall look to the homes of our American boys and girls.

I was brought out of my theorizing by Mrs. Robinson's information that there are seldom any tears shed by girls or women brought to the jail except in cases where a girl has been arrested for the first time. "After that," she exclaimed, "they come in with a smile, greeting the others with a 'Well, hello, girls, I'm back again!'"

The rules I read inside the woman's section are in part as follows: Every prisoner, when received, shall bathe and thoroughly cleanse his person and shall take a bath once each week thereafter.

Prisoners must wash their nnderclothlng once every week. Rach inmate shall make up his bed and put his cell in pei-fect order even' morning and shall not Tie on hts bed or enter his cell after the same has been put in order unless so ordered or permission obtained from the Jailer.

He shall also perform snch duties in taking care of the Jail and keeping it clean and in order as may be assigned to him.

Prisoners may receive visits from their relatives and friends from 2 p. ~p

gives the little folks a lot of fun and exercise. Strongly built and nicely finished.

m. to 4 p. m., on Thursday and Sunday of each week. At 9 p. m, the gong will ring when all must undress and retire.

The third rule is that which keeps the women inmates of the Jail too busy to knit. Only in cases where women and girls eorpect immediate release on bond or who may be incarcerated for only a few hours, are they not called upon to work to keep the jail clean, the food cookod and the laundry work done.

From the spirit of those women told of In the above article—a spirit that does not appear in the least disturbed by locked doors and stringent rules, would it not seem to you as it does to me that, "Stone walls do not a prison make.

Nor iron bars a cage!"
