SATURDAY JULY 20, 1*18.
W. W. AGENTS Of KAISER, SAYS EASLEY
Sabotage Program Same AM That Planned By German Spies, Is Charged By Writer.
N-EfW YORK, July 20.—The raising: of a 150,000 fund to defend the W. W. leaders now being: tried for seditious propaganda is called a conspiracy by Ralph Easley,. He has spent some time Investigating the activities of the b/dy and associated with him in this work was T. Everett Harre, a wellknown writer, -who for a time was a socialist but who now asserts that the I. W. W. movement amounts to nothing more or less than an agency for the kaiser.
Mr. Harre, In his brochure, alleges that the identical sabotage program of the I. "W. W.—the organization which the "intellectuals" referred to are now defending—was adopted and has been assiduously carried out by agents of the kaiser in the United States. According to Mr. Harre, the methods and acts of German spies and agents parallel the methods and acts of I. W. W.s, both of which have been designed directly and indirectly to hinder America's military preparations and render the nation impotent in its war against tjermany.
Kven before the European war broke out, according to a German official communication quoted by Mr. Harre, the imperial government sought to learn the methods of sabotage employed by anarchistic labor in this country, and after the outbreak of the war in !Rurope, It instructed Captain von Pa-pen to enlist the aid of these same destructive forces to destroy munition plants and prevent the sailing Of ships.
Since the United States entered the war. both the I. W. W. and German agents have worked along the same lines, using the same methods, to the end of crippling America in the war to the advantage of Germany. Before the Kerensky govern mont. was overthrown in Russia, the Russian Bolshevikl engaged in a conspiracy with the T. W. W. In the United States to precipitate a revolution both countries. Their avowed policy of opposing the war, and commission of acts deliberately designed to thwart the progress of the war, carried to an extreme realization, says Mr. Harre, "won Id mean a fate ajutfogrxu to that of Russia. In that the W- and German agents here work to the same end." He adds: s "Polling by the force of arms, Germany accomplished the undoing and surrender of Russia through the same forces of disorder and unreason whose methods she found ready-made and adequate to her purposes In America. That Germany was not obliged to have recourse to her unique criminal originality In her efforts to defeat us by •warfare from within is an Impressive indictment of the organisation whose policy is violence and whose purpose is revolution and the overthrow of democratic government. "As long ago as Novemier, 1914, the German government not only seized upon the methods but sought to enlist the active help of anarchistic labor organizations in a world-wide plot for sabotage, revolution and strife. "There is little or no danger at all Of tho Bolshevikl tever capturing American labor organisations, or even becoming influential among them. But in the unskilled and unorganised trades where the W. W. radicals h&vo caused the most troirble, there Is also fertile soil for the apipeal of the Bolsheviki to the ignorant. "For 13 years the 1. W. W. haa fomented Uncalled for, indiscriminate Strike*, while at the same time the American Federation of Labor has settled strikes and secured favorable concessions to the just complaints of labor in a peaceful manner, through committees composed of brainy mm who belioved in fairness in their dealings With labor and capital alike. "The I. W. W. has indeed only succeeded in shocking crimes of destruction and bloodshed. It has only achieved one signal service—that of abetting and carrying on the work of imperial Germany within our shores. At the very time that Lenine and Trotsky financed by (Jonnan funds, were plotting to overthrow th* Russian government, the Bolshevikl leaders were in correspondence with the I. W. W. leaders in the irnited States, plotting together to stir up labor troubles here. "But the American !a*bnrfnjj men Would have none of their kind of doctrine and
very
little headway was
made in this country, and then only •mong the more ignorant classes. The I nlted Mine Workers and the American Federation of Labor came out and repudiated any connection with the I. W. W. Anyone snsipected of being Connected with the Bolshevikl was told to move on. Organised labor had no mom for anyone seeking to bring to this country tka obaoe that ruled in Russia. "The Bolshevikl message to the ignorant is: .'International socialism is Holler than nationalism It is well to let the nations perish that Bolshevism »iay live.' "On thi« platform the Bolshevikl finds it easy to apologize for the betrayal of Russia to Germany. What of it. if Germany claims the victory? What of it if Germany has split up Russia? "What of it if Germany has torn irreat provinces from the Russian empire? What of It if Russia has been humiliated and dishonored? What of It if the German emperor's iron heel grinds the very hearts out of the Russian people? Bolshevikl has for a short tiino been the ruling government of Russia, and has proven itself a failure. even with the guiding hand of their German masters. Bolshevism is On its last legs and it is only a question of a few weeks before its downfall will be complete."
