MANY SEEK POSITION OF

Ed Stewart's Refusal To Accept Appointment Brings Out Raft of Candidates.

4y Special Correspondent* BRAZIL, Ind., July 18.—Since Pi eelcent Edward Stewart of the United Mine Workers of District Eight delined the appointment of state mine ins: ector, the life of John G. Bryson, it'l'iiiilican district chairman, is not altogether a bed of roses. A whole mess of candidates have sprung up in this section of the state for the job. Among the applicants for the: job are Jonathan Thomaa, who was deputy state inspector ud»'r State Inspector Robert Fisher, a number of years ago. Thomas is now in the grocery- business in this city and ha.? raanv friends working for him for the place, Samuel J. Wilton, formerly of this city and Carbon, bu» now of Rockvillc. is also an applicant for the plauce, and District Chairman

Bryson is being kept busy listening to the claims of the various candidates to the position. Chairman Bryson is much disappointed over Stewart's failure to accept the place.

Draft Evader Caught.

BRAZIL, Ind July 18.—Alton Jrmes. who was arretted at Paris, 111., Tuesday, on advice^ from the Clay county conscription board for evading the draft, was tiroiiRht to this city yesterday by a deputy sheriff. Jones registered in this city, but failed to return his questionnaire. Hp succeeded in com incing the board that he had failed to receive the questionnaire and had not intentionally ignored it. He was furnished with a new question- i nalre, which he filled out and wfas taken ha«-k to Parte, wh^re h* is being held on. the charge of bigamy.

Improving Edifice.
