The ourator, itrho stood at his elbow, made a quick bow and turned in the direction of the marble steps, which he hastily remounted. A murmur from the crowd followed this action and continued till he disappeared in the recesses of the right-hand gallery. Then, at a gesture from Mr. Qryce, it suddenly ceased, and with breathless Interest easy to comprehend, they one and all waited for hit acxt word. It was a simple one. "We are all obliged to Mr. Jewett for his speedy compliance with so unusual a request. He has made my task an easy one."
Then, glancing at'the Mst of flames and addresses which had been compiled for him by Sweetwater, he added: "I will read off your names as recorded here. If each person, on nearing his own, will move quickly to his place and remain there till my young man can make a note of the same, we shall get through this matter in short order. And let me add"—as he perceived here and there a shoulder shrugged, or an eye turned askance—"that once the name is called, no excuse of non-recollection will be accepted. Tou must know, every one of you, just where you were standing when the cry of death rang out. and any attempt to mislead me or others in this matter will only subject the person making it to a suspicion he must wish to avoid. A Problem of the First Order.
"Tou see,** he quietly announced, "the case is serious. Twenty-two of you, and not one to speak the halfdozen words which would release the rest from their present embarrassing: position! What remains for us to do under circumstances like these? My experience suggests but one course: to narrow down this inquiry to those^— you wi)l not find them many—who from their nearness to the place of tragedy or from some other cause equally pertinent may be looked upon as possible witnesses for the coronet's jury. That this may be done speedily and surely, I am going to ask you, every one of you, to retake the exact place in the building which you were occupying when you heard the first alarm. I will begin with the curator himself. Mr. Jewett, will you be so good as to return to ttt^ room, and if possible to the precise spot, you were occupying when you first learned what had occurred here?"

But the service? was distressingly slow. Several times Warren glanced over his paper before the waitress appeared with the fruit and cereal. "One orange for two," glowering at the four thin sugar-frosted slices. "No wonder they slice 'em," "Here, dear, have mfne. really don't care for fruit this morning." "You eat your breakfast," shoving hack her proffered saucer. "Now for the excelsior," as he emptied the tiny cream pitcher over his shrodded wheat.
The cereal dispatched, there was another trying wait. Warren, having •digested the paper, drummed Impatiently on the tab!©.' "Sav, I'd like to get to tho office some time today." "She'll cotftr in a 'minute, dear." feeling responsible for anv delinquency. "It would've taken even longer at the Astorbllt. "We re the only ones herel Why the Sam Hill can's they trot out the eats. Who runs this shebang anyway? Why aren't they on the Job?"
Pushing back his chair, he started "angrily towards the swinging door in the rear. But juht then it opened, and a refined-looking woman, evidently the proprietress, hurried in. "Oh, I'm sorry to keep you waiting, but we haven't-any muffins this morning:. We've made you some waffles— just a moment now."
Warren, having a pronounced weakness for waffles, returned to his seat somewhat mollified.
The proprietress, herself brought in the rest of the breakfast, a one-egg omelet, a pot of coffee with aBother Infinitesimal .pitcher of cream—but a heaping plate of delicateljr browned waffles, smoking hot.
Gulping his omelet ha a couple' of mouthfuls. Warren attacked the waffles.- As the piled plate dwindled with amazing rapidity, the proprietress again appeared. "Is everything alt right? W*e've just opened her«(," apologetically. 'We were in the block below—buj they're tearing down the building." "You ought to do well in this neigh"borhood." thawed Warren, under the benign effect of the waffles. "Yes, if the rent wasn't so high. We've a fairly good luncheon and tea. trade but very few for breakfast and dinner.**
N
"Put out a waffles sign!" enthusiastically. "Make them a specialty. If you've got a cook who can turn out waffles like these, let people know about it!" ^Ob, I made those myself." reddening. "Would you like some more? Tnere's plenty of batter—it won't take a moment." "All right," with a grin, "guess we can stow away a few more of those."
In the wait that followed it was Helen who glanced anxiously at the clock, for Warren, seeming no longer concerned about the time, read the shipping news'with beatific patience.

when your name is spoken, step quickly into place, whether that place be on this floor or in the rooms or galleries above.—Mrs. Alice Lee!"
Tou can imagine the flurry, the «toltement and the blank looks of the average men and women he addressed. But not one hesitated to obey. Mrs. Le« was on the. farther side of the statues before her name had more than left his lips. Her example set the pace for those who followed. Like soldiers at roll-call, each one responded to the summons, going now in one direction and now in another until on reaching the proper spot he or she stopped.
Only six persons followed the curator upstairs—an old woman who shook her head violently as she plodded slowly up the marble steps Correy a man with a packet of books under his arm (the same who had been studying coins in section II) a young couple whose movements showed such a marked reluctance that more than one eye followed them as they went hesitatingly up, clinging together with interlocking hands and stopping now on one step and now on another to stare at each other in visible consternation and a boy of fourteen who grinned from ear to ear as h« bounded gayly up three steps at a time and took his position on the threshold of one of the upper doors with all the precision of a soldier called to sentry-duty—a boy scout it ever there was one.
There were twenty-two names on the list, and with the calling out of the twenty-second, Mr. Gryce perceived the space before him entirely cleared of its odd assortment of people. As he turned to take a look at the result, a gleam, of satisfaction crossed his time-worn face. By this scheme, which he may be pardoned for looking upon as a stroke of genius worthy of his brilliant prime, he had set back time a full hour, restoring as by a magician's wand the conditions of that fatal moment of initial alarm. Surely, with the knowledge of that hidden bow in his mind, he should be able now to place his hand upon the person who had made use of it to launch the fatal arrow. No one, however sly of foot and quick of action, could have gone far from the gallery where that bow lay in the few minutes which were all that could have elapsed between the shooting of the arrow and the gasping cry which had brought all I within hearing to the Apache section,
The man or woman whom he should find nearest to that concealed door in the northern gallery would have to give a very good account of himself. Not even th®| curator would escape suspicion unaer those circumstances.

on he proceded to dispatch them with unabated apetite. "How's this?" tanrtBg over the cheek the proprietress laid by his plate. '"There's some mistake."
The* %oman looked puzzled and Helen shot him a glance of astonished reproach. Surely he would not question the price of the waffles. "Only a dollar twenty? You haven't charged for those extra waffles." "Oh. there's no charge, for those," with a relieved smile. "I'm glad you enjoyed them." "Well, I hope you'll make a success of it here. We'll be around some evening for dinner," and laving two onedollar bills on the table Warren grabbed his hat and strode out without giving the embarrassed woman time to protest. "Oh, that was dear of you! I'm glad you did it," Helen hugged his •arm as they hurried down the street. "Nice woman. Have to send her some trado. That's the kind of a place you want to help." Then they approached the subway: "Well, so long, Kitten. Take a car back. Got any money with you?"
A wave of his hat, and he disappeared down the subway steps. Turning homeward, Helen pondered on his almost childish inconsistencies. Had it not been for the waffles there would have been no denunciation too scathing for the meager-portioned, slow-serviced breakfast. But he had now swung to the other extreme.
There were moments when Helen felt leniently older and wiser, when her attitude toward Warren was indulgently maternal, when she made tolerant allowances for his outbreaks.
Such moments were salutary. They kept her from taking too seriously his temperish displeasure, for there was always the feeling that some triviality might turn his most explosive wrath, to a cherubic amiability.

$50,000 HARK NEAR IN W. S. S. DRIVE HERE
Women"# Committee Will Turn In About $30,000 of This— Much Work Yet.
By Rev. LeRoy Brown,
Final figures are not yet available for the sale of Thrift and War Saving stamps during the drive of last week. It is pretty certain, however, that the total sales for Vigo county will approximate $50,000, about $30,000 of which is due to the well organized faithful work of the women's committee.
That Vigo county came no nearer her $267,075 quota than she. did is not the fault of these loyal workers. Of the other counties in the Fifth district, Hendricks reports that she has probably sold her allotment, although complete returns are not yet in. Putnam county's cash sales were -very near her quota Wednesday afternoon, with a sufficient number of pledges to carry her safely over. Clay county had her campaign early in May, and Vermilion began her drive yesterday.
Plans are now being formulated to meet Vigo's quota for the entire year in the intensive campaign for pledges which will culminate in the observances of a special national thrift day on the 28th of June. It has been a difficult task to arouse Vigo county to appreciate the necessity of meeting her war saving's quota, but we believe that in the end she will appreciate it and will do all that is asked of her. It is high time, however, that we give serious attention to President Wilson's request that the $2,000,000,000 issue of War Savings stamps be sold, or subscribed for, before July 1st, instead of Dec. 31st, as was originally planned. Vigo can take Care of her share, but in order to do it she must buy far more heavily than she has yet done. We have a long way to go, so we better start at once.

SAYS IT ACTED LIKE A CHARM. Coughs, colds, sore throat or bronchial troubles which persist at this time of the year usually arc of an obstinate character. That is all the more reason why a truly reliable remedy like Foley's Horey and Tar Compound should be used. Mrs. Margaret Smale, Bishop.
