JUST TALK.

Martha Hawkins must indeed have had an.artist's soul. The location of her rustic shelter was sufficient 'proof of the assertion. Fropi the decaying structure one could look down through a natural archway upon Pretty creek the clear waters of which mirrored a thousand forest

forms aoid figures

which the eye did not at once note. Mr. Gordon's attention first was given to the summerhouse Itself, but soon he followed my glance and caught a glimpse of the cool limpid pool which glistened through the half bare braadies of the trees. "It must be a very attractive spot in spring," he suggested after a njoment. "Just now it is a little too sombre."

I turned to him with a protest. "It is too sombre only for those wfco wish to be in a gay mood. For others there is a world of sweetness here because of the very fact that them is also a world of sadness." "I know what you mean, although I am determined not to find the attraction you mention," he declared. "I am going to be gay, therefore I must insist that there is no beauty her® for me."

Catarrhal Deafness Cannot Be Cured

by local application*, as they cannot reach the dlaeascd portion of the car. There Is only one way to cure catarrhal teafneas, and that is by a constitutional remedy. Catarrhal Deafneas la caused by an ln« flamed condition of th» mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube la Inflamed you have a rumbling sound or lm« perfect h*arlng, and when it Is entirely closed. Dicfnesa la the result. Unless the Inflammation can be reduced and this tube restored to Its norma) condition, hearing will be destroyed forever. Many cases of deafness are caused by catarrh, which la an Inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. Hall'a Catarrh Medicine acts ihru the blood on the mucous surfaces of the aystem.

"This is like any other spot of nature,'' I told him, speaking more to myself than to him. "One can not enjoy it to the greatest extent unless one is before the real beauty of it all can be before the real bauty of it all can be appreciated, and so long as there are other human beings to distract one's attention, to disturb that realization of kinship, one can not feel the loveliness which is here for anyone who will bu.L seek it." •Mr. Gordon understood me perfectly, but he preferred to seem not to. As a matter of fact he was afraid of falling into a mood which my words Indicated had overcome me. "I readily can understand how ar artist would, choose this spot for her place of inspiration," he said, "but if one must be always serious to enjoy it, then I am willing for it to remain In posession ol{ artists forever. I am like Tommy Appleby in that respect. Tommy would want to build Ashing Clubhouse here."

The conversation was well *way from myself and the subject which I Mr. Gordon had been so Intent upon a short time before, and I determined I that If possible I would keep it just' as far away. "Come," I urged, "let's take Olosei look at Miss Pretty creek. If the close •ip view is as good as the distant we shall be able to tell Mrs. Hawkins, that her daughter was a real artist," "We will tell her that, anyhow," Mr. Gordon declared. "At !ea#t I shall." "Did you notice her admiration for Mr. Higginbotham?'' I asked. "It was almost pathetic."

Mr. Gordon's face became thoughtful. "I very, strongly suspect that Mr. Higganbotham has been helping them In a financial way." he said. "Two or three things which Mrs. Hawkins

said

suggested it." "Do you tliwit they need help?" "I do not know.'* "It Is such a pity," I murmured. "Two old souls with-'"nothing hut memories behind them and with but a few years at most to live—it Is too bad that such as Ihey should have to worry about how they will live.''

Mr. Gordon turned quickly to me. "Would you like me t'o do something for them?" he asked. "I shall be very glad to do ft if It will give yau any pleasure." "It would give me a great deal of pleasure,** I told him, "but you must not do it on my account. Surely they, themselves, are worthy of anything you could do to help them."

Mr. Gordon changed the STfbject almost immediately, but I was convinced that he made up his mind to help the old couple, and I was not surprised a few weeks later to learn that an unexpected windfall had come to our hostess on that day.

ia a fine spirit of co-operation between the Liberty Loan and the war pavings committees. We are all working- for the one cause—to win. and bond money and stamp money all goes for the same purpose. Isn't it great that every citizen can help, from the capitalist who invests his thousands In bonds, down to the little school girl, the proud owner of a single thrift stamp.

Every day a goodly number of the s-almon-colored order cards are turned in at the postoffioe, showing that the Boy Scouts are busy selling war savings and thrift stamps.

The merchants of the country are to be organized under the National Retail Dry oods association, for the purpose of selling $100,000,000 worth of government war savings securities over the counters of retail drv goods and department stores. A leading merchant in each state will be named state director and every dry goods store, from the big city emporium down to the "general store" at the country crossroads will be asked to become a government agency for the collection of smail savings for Uncle S^m's war chest. It is estimated that 6,000,000 shoppers visit these stores every day.

State Director J. D. Oliver, of South Bend, urges every thrift club or war savings society in Indiana to report its organization to the war savings committee, 114 North Main street, South Bend. Wherever ten or more school children, or ton or more workers, are regularly buying thrift stamps, such nrganidation is really in existence.
