A tense pressure of the muff against her face stifled the leaping explanation. "Now you've got it-—'hope you'll have sense enough to take care of it."
For a daaed moment she stood wfttt the soft fur crushed againet her rising color. Then came the surging impulse —not to tell him. She had not meant to deceive him—it had been his own misconstruing of her remark. "Well, it won't walk off—needn't stand there hugging it. Your soup'll be stone cold.

but of all of th«m, she felt she has been deprived. EacL imagined purchase brought an additional sense of loss.
Thai such vain brooding*? were a flagrant, waste jf time, she knew. She was throwing after the loss Of her muff, the further loss of hours spent in profitless regret.
The dull persistent headache, from ?ack of sleep the nlglit before, accentuated her depression. She almost dreaded Warren's hon^e-coming, which would mean furrher caustic comments on her carelessness.

Berlin despatch says that in February entente aviators made 23 attacks on German towns. Theves was raided three timew and Searbrucken, Mannheim and Pirmasens, once each. While no military damage was caused, the despatch says, a considerable amount of damage ws done to houses and other private property. Twelve perwons were killed and 86 injured, fifteen of them severely. One biplane fell into the hands of the Germans.

The other attacks were directed against industrial districts in Lorraine. Luxemburg, Sear and Moselle. They are said to have caused no interruption of work, the raiding places in a majority of cases having been prevented b- the antl air-craft guns from reaching their objectives.

She had made straight for the muff. Her suspicious sniffings proclaimed it a stranger, but to this subtle betrayal Warren was oblivious. "Spinach again? Threo flights running? Great gune, can't you vary our vegetables?" "Dear, I ordered string-bears, but he made*a mistake and sent spinach. It'll not happen again," conclliatorily.
A clamorous ring of the door-bell. Nora's step through the hall, then the mumble of a man's voice.
The next moment, Nora, wreather In smiles, appeared with a package. "It's your muff, ma'am! A ma^i from the ta^ci cowmpany brought it. He said t'was turned in last night but the watchman didn't report it. "Hold on, there's gome mistake," frowned Warren. "That doesn't belong here—Mrs. Curtis'# muff- has been found." "Oh! Shall I call him back, sir?" "N o, wait a moment," his stabbing gaz© now on Helen's crimson face. Then brusquely,V "That'll do Nora—I'll attend to this."
As the pantry door swung closed, Warren ripped open the package exposing the muff—the exact replica of the one on the sideboard. "What does this mean?"
She tried to meet his gaze, but flinched before its steely hardness. 'What's the trick this time?" with a sneer. 'There's no trick," passionately. "I didn't say it was my muff! I*started to say that Ardrrian's advertised some reduced furs—you put vour own construction—" "Oh, I did,

SLACKERS ARE SCORED.
So-Called Conscientious Military Objectors Are "Trimmed" By Speaker. "Men who try to cover up their cowardice under the cloak of conscientious objection to military service are beneath our contempt," declared the Rev. W. O. Rogers, of the Plymouth Congregational church, who spoke at State Normal chapel exercises Monday morning on the subject, "War and Conscience." "Such cowardly slackers should be pnt on a ship in the submarine zone and sent to the bottom of the soa by a German torpedo." "I will take off my hat to the courage of a real conscientious objector, but I have very little respect for his judgment. The real conscientious objector, as typified by members of the Quaker and other well known sects, is willing and glad to help his country in every way possible and is among the first to enlist in the hospital or medical corps or some other branch just as important as the real fighting unit§. If a citizen cannot take up arms, let him prove his loyalty by doing every bit he can in some other way, or forever hide his face in disgrace, in shame. "Christ would have had his followers strike back in self defense. If the Good Samaritan had happened along the way while the robbers were beating the traveler, he would not have waited until they left and then gbne to soothe the injuries of the wounded man but if necessary, would have taken the lives of the robbers in defenae of the traveler who was being attacked. The meek shall rula the earth, and the meek nation now is the one that will sacrifice every effort in defense of democracy. In years to come these are the nations that shall rule the earth."

SMS PLEAD F!
Mass Meeting HelE Sunday at Normal To Assist Vigo County's Financial Flan.
Gr'eat stress was laid on the seriousness of the war and part America is to play in it, in an address by Charles A. Bookwalter, former mayor of Indianapolis, made before an audience at the State Normal Sunday afternoon in behalf of the Vigo County Rational.War Fund association.
Mr. Bookwalter told what other cities have done along this line, how the lack of a war budget was interferring with the work of busy men. He also scored the Potsdam gang, which he accused of turning the German from the peace loving kind, the kind we know in America, to the German11 who believer that his nation is entitled to rule the world and who holds to the theory thai: might makes'right and who is not only ever ready to accept the word of the war lords, but who is offering excuses to prove that their ruthlessnees at sea. in Belgium and other countries is Justified by conditions.
The speaker told of the camt?algii at Columbus, O., where $3,500,000 was raised in a week. H# said that a map of Franklin county was prepared and every working man and woman, was calied upon to give vone day's wage each month to the fund. Business men were assessed according to their profits. Then in order to provide that every cent of this fun-fl would go for war purposes a special fund of $86,000 was subscribed by businesa men t» take care of the administration expenses.
While disagreeing with President Wilson in politics, Mr. Bookwalter said it is the duty of every American to get behind the president and quit their criticism. He asserted that America should have intervened when Belgium was invaded, ftnu that it .was our duty to take up arms when the Lusltania was sunk. We should havejaegun preparing for hostilities, he said, in 1914, but asserted that we should not criticise President Wilson because he did not begin preparations then, for it he had the people would not have supported him. He declared the country had done wonders since it had entered the war and urged a more co-operated support of the men guiding the destinies of the nation both at home and abroad.
Mr. Bookwaft*r related several Instances which illustrated the workings of the German mind, which*he attributed to the well laid plan of the German ruling class to change the German from the lovable'fellow we know to the Hun of today.
Previous to Mr. Bookwaiter's address President W. W. Parsons of State Normal spoke of the campaign being con-
ducted and of the success so far

county, he said, is fourth in wealth ir* the state of Indiana, only Marion, Allen and Lake ranking ahead of the count on the Wabash. Records at the state house show this county's taxables are valued at $66,000,000. This does noi include bonds ot various sorts and since property 'is not listed at its fact value, the speaker declared that a conservative estimate would piace the total value of property in Vigo county in excess of $100,000,000.
People in Vigo county, he said, were not asked to give any great amount, considering the total wealth, for the request mean* only giving one-third of one per cent a year for war purposes. The total meirrbpr=hip reported up to Sunday was 11,000 members, with an a\eruge of $1.31 a month contribution, making a total of $14.."500 a month in pledges. The aim is to obtain $3».000 monthly and President Parsons invited recommendations and suggestions that would tend to show the executive comiBitLee Jaow. to improv* on it* work*..
