illustrating how the conglomerate Slav population of southern Austria-Hun-gary is ready to break away from the Hapsburg master.
These two divisions, originally Au»Orian, were forced into the ranks early In the war from Bosnia, Crotia and Herrogovlna, the Slav states forcibly annexed by Austria. It Is the great hut bed of Slav agitations. The population Is overwhelmingly Slav, but Is held in subjection by the Iron military rule of the dual monarchy. It was here the Kuropean war was unchained by the assassination of the Austrian crown prince.
f- Slav Versus Slav. The Austrian staff held the Slav threes in reserve for a time, well knowing the bitterness in the ranks. But
When Gen. Brusslloff's great drive began a year ago in Galicia the Austrians had need of every man of their resources. They brought the Slay divisions into line, and for the first time Slav was facing Slav, the southern Slav element being thrust forward to meet the rush of their brothers from the north. It was literally a fight of brother against brother. After on® engagement a young Serb officer went ajnong the enemy wounded and there found two of his brothers fatally shot by his own men and by his own orders.
But the ties of ra^e were stronger than flags. In one fight a machine gun battery attached to one of the Slav divisions opened by firing against the advanoing Russians and then swinging their pieces about and ended the day bv pouring their battery into the Austrians. As the two sides came together the Slavs with the Austrian forces would call out "Ml Smo Serbia," meaning "We are Serbs," which was the signal for steady streams of desertion from the Austrian to tfce Russian ranks. There was much surprise a year ago at the reports of great numbers of prisoners taken by Brussiloff, and It Is said this Is largely accounted for by the great numbers of southern Slavs who. forced to fight, in the Austrian ranks, voluntarily gave themselves up as prisoners when they met their Slav brothers from the north.
These two Serbian divisions made Hp of Slav prisoners from tne Austrian ranks, have been placed under the /v upand of Gen. Zlrkevltch, the devtjuuer of Belgrade, with headquarters at Salonlki. Recently a thousand of them, assembled at Odessa, after voluntarlly being prisoners, carried out a .remarkable trip from Odessa to Petrograd, London, Paris, Marseilles to Salonlkl, In ninety-two days, thus comi i pleting within about three months the transfer of service from tho Austrian, front Iti Galicla to the allied front In 8a1onfk|.

Hair Often Ruined "v By Washing With Soap
Soap should be used very carefully, if you want to keep your hair looking its beet. Most soaps and prepared Shampoos contain too much alkali. This dries the scalp, maJkes the hair brittle, and ruins it.
The best thing for steady use is Just ordinary mulsifled cocoanut oil (which is pure and greaseless), and is better than the most expensive soap or anything else you can ueo.

NORTHERN LIGHTS IN FINE DISPLAY HERE
Visible All Over This Section, and fclay Old Ned With Telephone Lines.
Terr» Hauteans out late last night were treated to a display of the northern lights, that peculiar Arctic phenomena you used to read about in your physical geography.
The lights knocked out telephone service by neutralizing the positives and negatives (whatever they are) and caused those citizens who had imbibed a little too freely to imagine that the north end of town was on fire.
Jeff Walsh says the aurora bo real is was very plain from his house. He says he called his Swedish house girl to see them.
He said: "Oh, Louisa, get up. the northern lights are out." Ivoulsa replied "Dey shouldn't pe. I yust put oil in 'em yesterday."
Seen In Chicago.
CHICAGO, Aug.
The phenomena became visible and began to affect telegraph and telephone wires shortly before midnight last night and for several hours before oay light this morning many ^trunk line circuits were useless.
The display of the aurora tn Colorado was described as particularly brilliant, many persons believing the blood red appearance of the northern sky was caused by forest fires.
