CAUSE FOR JOY.

'•"The Tribune takes pride in pointing to the marvelous 'crop record istried by the government yesterday. This paper was one of the pioneers in thft war garden movement and the daily articles in the Tribune attracted •wide attention and induced thousands of people to join in the movement to increase the nation's crops. I "Yesterday's report indicates that these things have brought results of vast importance. Observers at Washington, in touch with the Hoover conservation bureau, are impressed with the remarkable response which Americans everywhere gave to the suggestion that they do everything possible to make this the greatest year in the history of American husbandry.
The spring injunction was to plant •very available area for the country's sake. The mid-summer injunction is to make the best possible use of the war garden's products. This involves canning and preserving. lOxperts of the agricultural department are now giving attention to this angle of the food cynervation problem. Through many agencies scattered through the country they are teaching the women of the land the art of food preservation, to the end that the season's surplusage may not be sacrificed to neglect, but may be utilized to the fullest extent in feeding Americans and their allies.
Canning and the drying of garden products are certainly no new arts to thrifty housewives, for they learned it from their mothers and have lost none of their cunning" in recent years of high prices. Yet there are always manv who ne«*d Instruction and are

ready to do a little more in the direction of food conservation if told how. New methods of preservation are being devised. Incidental food economies that might have been despised in other years cannot now' safely be ignored. The drying method of preservation has never been as popular in this country as it deserved to be. Now is the time to make oneself familiar with these devices, in order to get the highest possible benefit from America's great war crops.
TEAM WORK,
The war dispatches yesterday said that Emperor Charles, of/ Austria, felicitated the kaiser eta the success of the central powers in taking Bukowina, and that the kaiser replied that "Every day brings signs that our troops, with God's aid, will conclude a powerful peace."
Through Amsterdam comes the news that a letter was read in all the Berlin churches Sunday in which God was praised for protecting Germany and the purpose of the German people was set forth as follows: "We will comport ourselves as Christians toward our enemies and conduct the war In tlje future, as in the past, with humanity and chivalry."
For heaven's sake, will the Prussians spare the world nothing! Must we suffer infamous complacency as well as infamous brutality? It was German chivalry that began bombarding defenseless towns German chivalry befouled the wells of France and German chivalry brought poison gas into use. The whole story of Belgium since August, 1914, is the story of German humanity, and there is nothing more inhumane in history.
Humanity and chivalry'- What a fine laugh the old boy must have had.
A BOOB STATE.
The widespread disturbances all over Oklahoma during the past several days would indicate that the people there take their idea of patriotism from Senator Gore, whose behavior in the upper house must be the one consoling note coming out of America for the Prussian war lords. Gore's example seems to have permeated his home state.
Whether or not any of those taking part in the Oklahoma anti-draft riots should be put to death as traitors is a question to be answered only when all the facts are known. It will be neces-* sary to show that they levied war on the United States or that they adhered to the enemies of the United States, giving them aid and comfort. "Resisting the enforcement of a Taw

is not the same as making war, but certainly the conduct of the Oklahoma mobs was well adapted to give aid and comfort to the enemy.
If it should be shown that the resistance to the enforcement of the draft law was stirred up for the purpose of aiding the enemies of this United States, the case would be clear and a rope would be the only proper instrument with which to deal with the leaders.
If, however, the embattled slackers of Oklahoma should seem to be simply lawbreakers of the kind to be found in isolated and mountainous parts, of the country, where game laivs go for naught and the product of the still never pays a tax, that would be another matter.
Such men are hard to de^l with, but their little revolutions against the United States are never started with the thought of giving aid and comfort to anybody but themselves. They are not traitors, but individualists run wild and need teaching rather than hanging.
A course in patriotism should be given to them running through a period, of years which they would spend in a penitentiary.

France and England discovered this, after rushing a large proportion of their student bodies, and even the professors, to the firing line. Subsequently, it was necessary to recall as many of them as possible in order to reopen the schools.
The United States recognizes it, and care will be taken by the government to see that all schools where conditions will permit are reopened this fall. This is specially true of medical and technical schools, whose graduates are needed in the war.
It is true In a lesser degree of other schools, for all of them have a part in the shaping of character and the diffusion of knowledge.
It has been truly said that all things hereafter will date from the war. We are too close to the tremendous struggle yet to realize this, but as we get further away we will get the perspective and learn how powerfully it has affected our lives, whether we take part actively in it or not.
The post-war period will bring with It new problems, which must be met by the men and women of the future. These future citizens of the world must be trained for the duties' and responsibilities that await them, and the schools are necessary to /e them this training.
How important, therefore, that our (schools should be pushed forward to the greatest efficiency they have ever known.
Gen. Pershing is studying French and Gen. Joffre is studying English. Those are more difficult Jobs for the old warriors than taking trenches, but we'll bet they succeed if they put their minds to It.
It is announced that United States soldiers in France can' vote this fall. But there are no elections worth speaking of this fall.

Newspaper Sndlcate.
Friday, August 10, 1917.
Astrologers read this as a black Friday, for all the stars are adverse. Uranua and Mar» rule with malefic power.
The Bigns seem to indicate conflict of some sort in which the army is engaged.
The peculiar aspect of Uranus gives a forecast of serious mental disturbance on the part of the public, which may give way to hysteria.
Uranus appears to foreshadow aviation accidents and trouble over aerial maneuvres.
This is a sinister aspect for secrecy. It is believed that when the stars are posited as they are today treachery is very easy.
The planet that rules the hidden things is read as foreshadowing trouble through the American tendency to be too frank and open in all transac- i tions.
Although spies will be arrested, the seers declare that the fountain-head of information will not be discovered until the new year.
Warning is given that in September questions concerning the national honor will be presented for public discussion.
A fire of disastrous results is threatened for London. Canada continues under a fortunate sway, but there may be internal disorders. Strikes and riots are indicated.
A noteworthy legal case will attract national attention and will be taken to Washington. D. C-, it is foretold.
Looking forward to the autumn quarter, the seers declare that the ingress takes place at a time that is likely to bring about many anxieties.
Persons whose birthdate it is should not make any changes. They may expect a troublesome year.
Children born on this day will be too fond of excitement to settle down to business, unless they are strictly trained.
