CHILDREN'S DAY SET FOB lU^DAY AT FAIR

Tofrens Shows Secured for Carnival Features—Other Details of the Big Event,

*The Trlbnn® Is able to announce! that the great Torrens shows •will be' here for the county fair, August 14-18. The shows come highly recommended and are said to have several features which will recommend them to the people of all classes.

Tuesday will be "children's day," with substantial presents for a num-, ber of the fortunate ones among them. Wednesday will furnish., the baby i show, always an interesting event, and with cash prizes for the handsomest ajid best formed tnrl and boy babies.! V rid ay will be "automobile day," when a flve-passenger touring oar will be given away. With the bountiful crops assured for the farmers of Vigo county, th« exhibit Of agricultural products give promise of surpassing that at previous fairs, and with all the special, features the Interest In the fair should bring the attendance to round figures.

Another feature was added to the fair of the Terre Haute Trotting and Fair association yesterday, when H. J. Clinebell. county agricultural agent, offered to furnish an exhibit, »howing the benefits of scientific farming as compared with the old-time methods so long in vogue, not alone in this vicinity, but throughout the country. One part of the exhibit will show the products of the farm run under the old system and another will show ihe result, of employing modern methods 'M In the same work. Ransom B. Phillips, county commissioner, tells of an ap5 piiration of modern methods by Mr.

Clinebell on liis farm. Before his oats were planted, Clinebell asked him to be permitted to treat the seed, so as to prevent the smut that is so destructive of that grain. Clinebpll treated the seed for the greater portion of the land set apart for oats, the balance belrijr planted untreated. After the •. gram •ad ripened seven series of experiments were made from the field that had the treated seed as well ast the other. In the former but one head of oats.to the hundred was found contalning smut, while in the land sown with untreated seed about twenty

heads to the hundred were found contaming smut. It meant a difference in the land used of about eighty bushels of oats in favor of the treated seed and, although Commissioner Phillips admits that he rather scoffed at the Idea of bettering grain by the methods suggested, he has become an ardent advocate of scientific farming, and is going to do all in his power to bring the matter to the attention of the farmers of Vigo county by assisting in making the fair1 exhibit a success. This is one of the things that will attract ihe farmers of Vigo county and vicinity, and will assist greatly In making the fair a popular institution.

Be Kept on the Ground for About Sixty Days. plea ihftt he was on a patriotic 'errand failed to soften the heart of .Ttidgo Newton, in City Court, Thursday morqing, when Thomas Cunningham was brought before him, charged with intoxication, Cunningham said that his home was in Middletown, O., and that he was walking through to an army aviation camp "somewhere in Illinois." Judge Newton told the man that there was a good aviation camp near Greencastle, Ind., and then sentenced him to serve 60 days on the state penal farm, the flrie being $50 and costs, making a total of 60 days.

Deep Vein Coal Company Reported That Forged Orders Were Out. rtenry Kelso, 19 years old, appeared Vfore Judge Newton in City Court. Thursday morning, to answer to a charge of larceny, and the ca.se was continued until Friday afternoon. The h0v was arrested at T*nth street and Wabash avenue by Patrolman Hagerty, and it is said that he had forged four orders on the Deep Vein Coal company.

A charge of larceny was placed against him and the case continued in order to give the police department and the prosecuting attorney a chance to investigate the matter.

DKNVFTR, Col.. A^ig. 9.—The Right Rev. Nicholas Matz, bishop of the Catholic diocese of Denver, died today. after a brief illness. Since a fall four years ago, his health had been failing. He was a native of Alsacetiorraine, and was 67 years old.
