GAMING RELIC WRECKED.
Buffalo Hotel Noted in Poolroom Days of California. SAUSAL1TO, CaL, July 20.—One of the last remaining relics of Sausallto's famous poolroom days—the old Buffalo betel—is being razed to keep it from falling into the sea. The building, abandoned shortly after the poolrooms were finally stamped out in 1907, haa long been a public menace. It was ordered torn down by the city trustees after an investigation showed that the supporting piles had been eaten away and that the entire two-story structure was practically supported in midair by a solitary cable anchored In the hill above. The property is owned by the estate of Charles Forrest, deCeased.
For years Ihe old Buffalo was the scene of some of the most spectacular gambling ever known in California. In the palmy days of King Horse, particularly after open poolrome had been lrtven out of San Francisco, it was a dull day when from $20,000 to $50,000 did not change hands In the famous old gambling hall.
MOCKING BIRD SAVED FOUR,
ST. LOUIS, Mo, July 20.—'The shrill whistle of a mocking bird saved the family of George Daglish, carpenter contractor, from asphyxiation in their home. The gas cocks on the range in the kitchen had been turned on while the family—George Daglish, his wife, Mrs. Louise Daglish, and a son, Burton, eight, and a daughter, Nettie, nine —were asleep on the upper floor. The mocking bird began whistling shrill notes and awakened Mrs. Daglish. She was partly overcome by the fumes of the gas, but awakened her husband. He also was affected by the gas fumes Mrs. Daglish roused the children and her husband carried them into the front yard. The windows and doors of the house were thrown open and Mrs. Dasrlish went into the kitchen and turned off the gas.
The mocking bird is named Jim. He is twelve years old and unusually large.
