TOP PRICE FOR MILK IN LARGER CITIES

-i jlwelve Cents a Quart In Chicago and I Boston—People Urged to Eat 1 Gieea Stuff and. Save Spuds.

CriluAGO, July 12.—Chilca^o is in the throes of a potato shortage. The trouble is not expected to be of long duration, but It is acute, and dealers Thursday sent out an S. O. S. to house•wives. Their call advised the use of other vegetables, which are plentiful and cheap, until the present stringency in tia market for potatoes is relieved.

Potatoes yesterday sold at $9 a barrel in carlots as high as $11 a barrel in lots of 50 to 100 barrels, and $12 a barrel in single barrel lota. A year ago, car-lots sold at $3 a barrel or exactly one-third this year's price.

Onions Are Cheap.

Tn Sharp contrast to this was the cost of California dried onions, which sold at [email protected] for 100 pounds sacks, as compared with $3.65@'3.75 for 90-pound sacks a year ago. Home grown cauliflower was plentiful and offered at 5U cents to $1 for a dozen heads, compared with 75 cents and $1.25 a year ago. and green onions at 6 and 8 cents a bunch were cheaper than last year at this time.

Numerous other kinds of green vegetables were on sale at prices but slightly higher than recorded at this time last year. "Dealers appealed to housewives to substitute radishes, lettuce, green peas, cucumbers, and cabbage for potatoes until the supply of the letter was enlarged.

Supplies On Way.

Many carloads of potatoes are en foute for Chicago. Yesterday's receipts were reported at only twenty cars, but there was an additional run of forty cars on one road that failed to arrivp. This run is expected to be here today, along with numerous other cars that tiave beem delayed in transit.

Traders are confident that present prices will not be long sustained. They believe a reduction is sure to come, but that it can be made more pronounced and more lasting if housewives' will turn to other vegetables for the time bein&

Mitk, 12 cents a quart after Sept. 1 Chicago became aware yesterday that there is such a possibility. Milk dealers declaro that the increasing prices in the country will make It impossible to continue to sell to consumers at 10 cents a quart. In Boston 12 cents nlready is being paid for milk and also in a number of other cities.

The complaint is brief and does not go into details regarding dates and other circumstances. The man with whom Murdock is alleged to have conspired is William Lancaster, colored, \s ho testified in the recent case against Chief Perrott and others that he had been clubbed by the police. When Murdock was told of the suit he did not take the charges seriously "I scarcely know Lancaster," he replied. Later in his conversation he branded Roach's charges as "ridiculous, absolutely."

•6ft

The complaint recites that Murdock, because of the position he holds as special investigator, called many per sons to his office. Much of this. Roach alleges, was not to investigate affairs of the government, but to scare per sons into stating that Roach had received graft money.

The Indianapolis Star of Thursday says: Joseph R. Roach, attorney, filed suit yesterday for $5,000 damages against George N. Murdock, special investigator in Indianapolis for the United States bureau of investigation. Roach alleges Murdock is guilty of conspiring to destroy his good repute and standing in the profession by circulating "false and malicious words."
