Then we heard the heavy feet of men marching Into the room, and I knew without looking out that they were policemen.
Mariam clutched my shoulder. "They will search the place and find us here!" she whispered.
It was only too true. In a few minutes the blue-coated guardians of the peace would be rounding up the witnesses of the shooting and we would fall Into their net "What can we doT* cried Mariam.
I looked around for a way of escape. Apparently th« only exit was into the room where the policemen were. "What is this?" asked Mariam, who hnd lifted a curtain on one side of the aicov®.
It was a door and Mariam already was tugging at it. "Wait!" I exclaimed, as I ran my hand up and down about the lock. "Perhaps there is a bolt. Yes, there is! We are safe!"
Mariam and I, our hearts pounding, opened the door cautiously and looked out Into an ill-smelling corridor at the end of which was a faint light. In any other circumstances we would have fainted with fright upon enter

Following the corridor toward the light, we came to flight of dirty stairs, up which we went without a

Mariam and I gazed into each other's pale face. It was Mr. Kenwood's voice. The sound of overturning tables and chairs and the short, rough exclamations of men as they rushed from the place all became minor sounds as we listened to the woman's cries and Mr. Kenwood's groans, it was evident that our former escort was in considerable pain, but it was impossible to imagine that a man who was seriously hurt could make so much noise about it.
moment's hesitation. Our one thought was to elude the policemen who, our fancies told us, were directly on our heels. For the first time in our lives we were hunted by officers of the law —fugitives from justice.
The stairway led to another corridor identical in appearance and odor with the one below, and along this we crept as noiselessly as we could, passing door after door until we came to the blank wall at the end. There we stopped, panting from exertion. "What must we do?" Mariam whispered, her self- assertlveness gone, utterly dependent now upon me for advice. "I don't know," I replied, "unless we can find a, door which will lead us to the street, and in order to find such an outlet we must try the doors." "But suppose—" trembled Marian. "Suppone what?** "Suppose the rooms are occupied, and something should happen?" "It cannot be much worse than going to Jail," I declared. "If we stay here we surely shall be caught within the next few minutes. The rooms are our only chance.
Mariam made no further objection and followed at my heels as I crept to the first door and tried the knob. It would not turn.
At the second door I met with no greater success, and the third door also was locked, but at the next I felt the knob yield. "Come," said I, turning to Mariam. "We must risk it."
Just then there was a heavy step on the stairway, and we darted through the door, which we closed softly behind us. There we waited, the pounding of our hearts the only sound we could hear.
