they begin to undermine Jaw hnd order and prompt anarchy, the free speech claimant discovers the theory won't work. If there are any more Goldmans or Berkmans, ample room for them ought to be immediately made in the federal prisons. ...
STAND OR FALL.
Ufited we stand, divided we fall. Anything that conduces to division is treachery. There is no other name for it. The time to reach this decision is now. Not after the worm sedition has weakened the government's purpose.
New York is setting a good example to the rest of the country by its severity in handling the antl-conscrip-tionists brought into court for refusal to register on the fifth. One man—Ha school teacher and a college graduate" is sent to the penitentiary for eleven months and twenty-mine days. An other, described as an anarchist,' was sent to prison for two years and ordered to pay $10,000 fine for the double offense of refusing to register and distributing anti-registration literature. A-third man received a sentence nearly as severe.
The government is now rounding up unregistered men of military age In various parts *f the country. The number Is extremely small, for the overwhelming majority everywhere acquiesced in the registration plan and did their part in making it a success.
To the minority of wilful non-regis-trationists who refused to obey the mandate of the government no mercy is due. They are to be arrested and brought to trial. The New York Judge sets an example worth emulation in other federal districts. The lesson deserves emphasis that any group of individuals, citizen or alien, which sets itself against the orderly operation of government shall inevitably feel' the weight of that government's displeasure.
DEAR DOCTOR.
The humor of publicity pops up now and then and adds a new zest to the search for this highly desirable commodity.
Out fax California It is observed that the editors of certain minor newspapers have declared themselves adverse to giving publicity where it Isn't deserved and where It isn't reciprocated.
These editors, a dozen or more, have decided to eliminate the titbe "doctor" when mentioning the names of physicians who do not advertise. If "Dr. William Jones" doesn't advertise in the usual columns, he will appear as plain "William Jones" In the news columns.

To affix the "Dr," would be free advertising and this the California editors have decided not to give hint
Possibly it will be something of a shock to those California medical men whose professional etiquet interferes with their taking space in the paid publicity columns. They may even decide to deprive the editor and the editor's family and his staff, of the benefits of their professional attendance.
This recalls the story of a somewhat pompous semi-military Terre Hautean whom Daa Voorhees used to tell about a good many years ago. whose political reputation was far from savory.
One day a local Journal made a very definite charge against him, a charge which seriously questioned his honesty. He went to a lawyer friend in a towering rage. "D-dld you sele that scoundrelly article?" he stammered. "Yes, I saw ifc ThoSe charge were very serious." **I don't car® ft dartt about. the charge*. Didn't you see what the editor did?"

WOW* YOU "CAN* HELP.
Mrs. Ragsdale says the tin can Is likely to win the war. Terre Haute is getting ready to do her part For the tin can is being applied as never before in the conservation of the food crop of this city and, likewise, the state.
There are now, In addition to the pro-' fesslonat domestic science instructors, 110 women especially trained for the work at Purdue university, spreading the gospel of the can, over the commonwealth.
Canning and drying of fruits and vegetables for use as human food next winter is being made the principal business of hundreds of women who, heretofore, permitted the season to pass without contributing a single pint to the store of foodstuff, much of which, as a consequence, went to waste.
In Lafayette, dally class Vork is being conducted among the women interested, demonstrations being given as to proper methods ot canning and drying. I»aPorte county is the field of activity of seven women experts who are each responsible for three townships. Altogether twenty counties of the state are wholly or in part being canvassed by these food conservators who are organizing classes wherever an aroused public interest warrants.
Purdue university has added eight Instructors to its staff for this particular work. All are engaged full time and the results of their activity indicate that there will be an unprecedented lot of canned and preserved footavailable for the flght against the high cost of living during the winter to come.
An encouraging feature of this work has been the number of well-to-do women who have the time to disseminate information and instruction, who have enthusiastically enlisted in the work.
The place for the tin can, in Indinna next winter, will be on the pantry shelf, filled with the very best of food, which otherwise might have been lost.
One thing !"urther, the school authorities should cooperate and through their domestic science department show how they can be of afctual practical value In a case like this. How would summer terms in canning at the high schools and the state Normal do as a demonstration of real patriotism?
ANOTHER ARMY.
A dispatch to The Tribune says that Mrs. Woodrow Wilson yesterday hung out the first card—card No. 1—as a member of the National Association for the Prevention of Food Waste. The women of Terre Haute are being asked to Join the movement. It may not seem so Important Just now, but if the war crisis long confronts this nation, these details will begin to loom large.
Every weed allowed to prosper in a war garden is an enemy of America and an ally of the kaiser. Every vegetable pest' permitted to thrive, every parasitic assailant of fruit or grain plays its infinitesimal part against democracy and world freedom. Every slice of bread wasted, every ounce of meat thrown out that might be utilized, represents American energy diverted and lost.
Americans have not as yet learned the power of Bmstll economies. They are learning, some rapidly, some slowly. One of the most useful aspects of the situation is that so many agencies are at work encouraging the public to eliminate waste, to Utilize every resource on the side of America, in the war.
The women are to be enlisted, under direction of Administrator Hoover, in a war on kitchen waste. Food thrift pledge cards will be distributed and the women asked to volunteer for the period of the war. From house to house canvassers will go with their cards, and the result should be a formidable army recruited to full strength for Bervice with the colors.
It has been said repeatedly that America's battle for democracy will be fought, and won or lost, in tha kitchens

of the millions. It is there that the food conservation question will be settled, and food Is likely to be the determining factor in the war.
Consideration of this point bringB the war straight home to every household in the land. It makes every housewife a soldier, and her handling of her particular food problem an element in the issue of the war.
