We have seen how the Russian government was overthrown because people were starving in a country that has had ever since the beginning of the war immense slapplies of surplus wheat which the closing of the Dardanelles prevented from going to market* "There is more manipulation, of food products in the United States'than in the belligerent countries of Europe, so. the first thing to do after we have quit throwing away food, wasting It and have begun to plant lobally in each state and county more heavily, is. to. shut off manipulation through an effective national food distribution organization.

Real Backbone of War.

"I cannot say how tremendously important is such a measure. I don't want to see the American people reach the point, as today has been reached in Germany, of having to "have the contents of their slop pails requisitioned. But we must remember that no food detail can be. jieglected. In France and England they were too slow in seeing "the importance of food —just two j*ears too slow., "Our remedy for high prices, for speculation, for providing enough .food to eat, lies in the duplication of the German system of organizing the faitmers, and in the proper adaptation

EVERYBODY'S DOIN' II PUTTING IN SPUDS

Indiana farmers will plant this year more than 100,000 acres of potatoes. Owing to the high cost of»seed and fertilizers the expense will range from $35 to $70 per acre. It is important, therefore, that attention be given to the best methods of handling this crop. The average yield of potatoes for a number of years past is scarcely ninety bushels per acre. It is possible to secure from Indiana soi's a yield of 200 to 500 bushels per acre. "Much loss results frSm planting the late or main crop of potatoes too early," states Prof. \JY G. Boyle of the horticultural department of Purdue. "Late potatoes should not \be planted until June" 15."

ELKS THANK LITTLE MAY.

Tell Miss Marsh of, the Wonderful Success of The if" Late Show. Movie News for this week contains the following: "Apparently Terre Haute, Ind., has a •warm spot in its heart for Mae Marsh, the Goldwyn Pictures' star, who recently took pleasure in lending her aid to the Elks' club of that city in connection with the production of a musical show, 'The Other Fellow's Girl.' "This show was written by members of the Terre Haute lodge of Elks, played bj{ Elks, stage managed and directed in every essential by Elks, and was, in addition, a splendid success, of which all Terre Haute was proud. -Vae Marsh's part in the show was small irdeed, for she merely wrote the lodge a Jetter of good wishes, which-was featured in their program, sent them autographed photographs for publication. for sale to the audience of for llraming in the club house., as the :r. embers saw fit. "Here is the letter she "has received: "Dear Miss Marsh: Success is one of the most enjoyable things in life, and it is especially so when one can share it with friends. While our musical show has broken all records, we are not unmindful of your assistance, and it is with a feeling of appreciation tha*. we tender you the deep thanks of. more than a thousand Elks in Terre Haute. tons of coal, now burned to produce electric light, would be saved. In the present situation, with a greater demand for coal than can be readily supplied, with railroads congested with coal cars, and the constantly rising price of fuel, that is an item worth considering.

There is a bill now before congress which provides that on the last Sunday in April of eaoh year all the time pieces in the country shall be advanced one hour and' on the last Sunday in September they shall be set back an hour, thwi saving an additional hour of daylight during the spring and sum-,, mer.

As a measure of economy the plan had already been adopted in England, France, G^tanany. There is more than a possibility that it will be adopted in the United States in time to get the benefit of it during the present year. So far no argument which even appears reasonable has been advanced against it.

Majority Favors Scheme.

In Chicago a number of large commercial houses have taken a vote of their employes on the subject. In every case so far reported the vote, has been between three and four to one in favor of making the change.

Action indorsing the' pliari has been or shortly will be taken by the National Chamber of Commerce, the Chicago Association of Commerce, the National Wholesale and Retail Dry Goods associations, and a large number of other commercial bodies. As one may observe, several large corporations are

HE ALMOST FELL DOWN. A. M. Hunsucker, Bogue Chitto, Miss., felt so grateful because of being freed from pain and distress that he wrote the following letter: "I was suffering from rheumatism, kidney and bladder trouble, also dizziness would almost fall down at times. I started taking Foley Kidney PJlls and two boxes gave me entire relief." Disordered kidneys give warning by pains in side and back, rheumatic aches, sore muscles, swollen joints, pufflness under 6yes, tired and languid feeling. displaying posters in their show w^n? dows advocating .the daylight saving plan as a nation-wide measure.

Owing to the difficulties which would follow its adoption in only one or a few communities, Chicago business men are generally opposed to any action being taken until congress shall pass the law :making it apply to the whole country.

Controller Adopts Plan.

City Controller Pike,. however, has decided tkt to wait. His working force now gets to the office at 8 o'clock instead of 9, and finishes work at 4 in the afternoon an hour earlier than heretofore. Mr. Pike is hoping tnat all other departments in the city hall will follow his example, though so far none of them have done so.

At, the meeting of the city council this afternoon -41d. Thomas O. Wallace will introduce an order directing that the ^city hall clocks be set'one hour ahead. He will, ask its passage. If he is successful all city hall employes will work—according to the present status of the clocks—from 8 a. m. to 4 p.

It is noteworthy that the daylight, saving movement originated with the greatest of^Lll teachers of thrift, Benjamin Franklin. It was 180 years ago that Franklin, waking at 4 o'clock in the morning in his apartment in Paris, which was already flooded with daylight, figured out ho\$- many thousands of candles could be saved if only people would get up a couple of hours earlier and go back to bed proportionately earlier at night.

Be Careful in Using, Soap on Your Hair

Most soaps and prepared shampoos contain too xnucti alkali, which is very injurious, as it dries the scalp and makes the hair brittle.

The best thing to use is Just pl^in mulsified cocoanut oil, for it is purfe and entirely greaseless. It's very cheap and beats the most expensive soaps or anything else all to pieces. You can get this at any drug: store, and a few ounces ^vill last the whole family for months.

Simply moisten the hair with water and rub it in, about a teaspoonful is all that is required. It makes an abundance of rich, oreamy lather, cleanses thoroughly, and rinses out easily. The hair dries quickly and evenly, and is soft, fresh looking, bright, fluffy, wavy, and easy to handle. Besides, it loosens and takes out every particle of dust, dirt and, dandruff. —Advertisement.
