Charles Warren Fairbanks Expresses Delight At Arbor Day Exercises— Howard Sandison Speaks.
Arbor day exercises .at St. Mary-of-the-Woods terminated in ope of the leally memorable events in the history of this institution. At the time the pi ogram was arranged the sisters were unaware of the coming of Charles Warren Fairbanks, former vice president, and his presence was an agreeable and an interesting addition to a noteworthy day.
The 'impression was mutual. The former vice president repeatedly expressed his surprise over the fact*that lerre Haute and Indiana should have such splendid institution and his never having visited it.
The^ exercises were conducted on the south campus and ox the academy campus. Two hundred girls dressed in white costumes and each carrying an American flag accompanied the speakers to the different points where trees were planted, ,&nd fifty girls similarly gowned carried an immense American ilag and raised it at each place as a back ground for the ceremonies. The parade was headed by a drummer girl dressed as Columbia,. and her epcpert playing gave the march time for the parade.
When the seniors' seven oaks and when the Wilson elm was planted the irls were ^grouped about in a hollow square, making an attractive spectacle. A moving picture of the entire ceremony was made, and this will be preserwed in the school archives for St. Mary's history.
Mr. Fairbanks Speaks.
Mr. Fairbanks said: "I had no idea of the magnificence of the solidarity of this institution. The great work that has been reared here is a delight to the, heart of any citizen, and the success and prosperity of St. Mary's is an inspiration. Little did I dream of the proportions of this institution. I have enjoyed the acquaintance of some of the talented and splendid women which St. Mary's has sent out I have known some of the able and admirable women who have devoted their lives to the Order of Providence and its work, but my personal observation of the work done here is a joy and a delight. The Christian atmosphere that is recognizable, the inspiration that here' is furnished the pursuit1 of knowledge of the languages, the arts and the sciences all impress me deeply. I have just heard that you young ladies just decided to abandon your annual promenade asid give the funds therefor to the national Red Cross. It is a praiseworthy act, and indicates that the patriotism of St. Mary's is .abreast of her talents and graces. I must again express my delight at the privilege of this visit."
Prof. Sandison Speaks.
Prof. Howard Sandison, vice president of the Indiana State Normal school, delivered a scholarly address in which he expressed his pride 'in the work of St. Mary's, and said: "St. Mary's is seventy-seven years, old. Those brave souls who builded here in the woods, remote from civilization, builded with a prophetic eye, and this consummation of their work is an impressive monument to their lives and work. St. Mary's was the first girls' college .in the United States to give degrees, a very significant fact in this day when woman is taking her place among the citizens of the world."
The complete program for the exercises was as follows Address, Prof. "Howard Sandison, vice-president Indiana "State Normal.
