NEWS OF THE STOCK MARKET.
NEW ViORK, April 9.—The week in the stock' market opened with an absence of the unsettling influences which provoked last Saturday's heavy liquidation, although the irregular trend of prices suggested further caution. Munitions and equipments were higher by 1 t6 2 points and United States Steel also responded to an extensive demand with metals, Mexican Petroleum, shippings and some of the moors. Coalei-s featured the railway group and Ohio Gas more than recovered last Saturday's sejjpack, rising 6 points. Recessions of 1 to 2 points were made by Texas Company, American Tobacco, Cuban American Sugar and Sloss-tfheffield Steel.
Over one-third of lie first hour's trading was in United States Steel, that ratio bein.g materially reduced later. '.Heel made an extreme gain of 1% points, with 1 for Nova Scotia Steel and 4 for New Bethlehem Steel, while Driggs-Sea'oury, a minor munition issue, rose 3 points.' Shippings, metals, sugars and numerous war contract or supply stocks were 1 to 4 points over last week's linal prices. Union Pacific and New York Central were added to the strong rails,, but elsewhere in that quarter increasing heaviness was shown. Dealings in international bonds were .unusually extensive.

Records addressed a mass meeting of Garfield students on the war Monday afternoon, advisin them not to "hold themselves too cheaply and rush into something when carried away by enthusiasm."' He pointed out that if they enlisted in the regular army., they would be required to serve out their full term, while if they enlisted in one of the local companies they would be able to return to school when their serviced were no longer needed. CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE.
CHICA&O, April 9.—Although wheat prices jumped to new high records today, the market was characterized by extreme flightiness, rather than strength. Sentiment was so uncertain and nervous that fluctuations at one time showed a range of nearly 5 cents within as many minutes. Opening prices, which ranged from l%c off to %c up, with" May at $2.10% to $2.12 and July at $1.87 to $1.88%, were followed by a swift general uptvwn to $2.15 for May and $1.91 for July, and then a sudden setback followed by a succession of wild changes inside the limit.3 named.
Corn proved even more erratic than wheat. After opening unchanged to l%c higher, prices in some fcases showed jumps of nearly 5c above Saturday's finish.
Oats were fairly active, but were weak as compared with ocher cereal*. New high prices for, the season were obtained by provisions.
BILLY SUNDAY REASONABLE.
Only Wants Expenses 'for His Gimcracks in New York. NEW YOHK, April 9.—New York don't know whether to laugh with Billy Sunday," or take him seriously. He opened "the great movement oh New York" yesterday afternoon and 20,000 people watched him. Some few underwent the religious throes Billy wriggled through. Most of them, however, observed Billy's gyrations with amusement.
They listened while he. assailed his foes, ar^d as he told them he was not going to taike one cent for himself. "Every cent you give me I shall divide equally between the Y. M. C. A. working among the soldiers and the American Red Cross, after I have deducted my actual expenses," he declared.
Sunday roared, anathemas upon the head of Satan while sprawled upon his hands and knees. He shouted his disgust at £.11 appendages of evil while clingipg to his pulpit like an acrobat to his trapeze. He took off and put on his coat seven times.
He paced and ran the length of the platform, calling down in a furore of resignation the spirit, the love, the guidance, and the protection of the Master.
He laid out upon the "watery eyed, red nosed, whisky soaked, mushy brained, foul bodied, God-forsaken" liquor interests with a fury that amounted to a challenge to fight it out with bare fists.
Thousands who arrived after 1:30 were turned away.
PUT GERMANS AT GARDENING.
ATLANTA, Ga., April 9.—Sailors of the German auxiliary cruiser Kronprinz Wilhelm, interned at Port McPherson here, will be put to work raising vegetables as soon as arrangements can be completed, it was announced authoritatively today. The plan is said to be in line with the government's campaign for increased food crops.'

EASTER AT FIRST M. E.
Reading .and Singing on Program and Church is Decorated. Elaborate Easter services were held at the First Methodist church during the Sunday school hour Sunday morrfing. Mrs. E. A. Sudbrink read a story of the crucifixion, during which intermediate girls sang and the church choir furnished a tart of the program. Five hundred persons were present and a collection of $300 taken.
Very suggestive of the Easter season, decorations were arranged throughout the church. Easter lilies and palms were arranged about the chancel while baskets of sweet peas and butterflies were suspended from the choir loft. A cross of white and greenery was stationed in the loft.
