SPRING NOVELTIES ON SHOW IN THE SHOPS
Beads and Fandangoes, Strongly. Reminiscent of the Aztec Period, In Favor.
Such a lot of novelties in the lines of beads, girdles, ear rings and mesh bags has never been seen at one time before. American made, too, we mustn't forget!
Now, these girdles you hear so much about are nothing more nor less than metal or jet- ornaments fastened together at occasional "intervals" by a chain or cord. The girdles might be termed an exaggerated ornament for the neck, simply transferred to the waist—only they don't stay about the waist they slide down loosely to the hips. They will be very effective with one piecensummer dresses and a few ha^e been seen used'with suits. "Jade" and "coral," said a young saleswoman to me. "It's the sama idea of high colors carried in the wearing apparel. We have jade and coral hat pins, S^ads, bracelets, necklaces, and so on."
What she showed was a rare combination of Indian,. Japanese and American with a bit of the old Spanish thrown in for good measure. I believe I have never seen so many beads at one t^ime. Let 'me describe one strand.
It was made of jade green beads in two sizes, white carved Indian ones rose and a large jade pendant.
Another stran^ of beads or necklace —whatever one chooses to call it— was a most attractive combination. of jade and jet with a Japanese designed metal ornajnent adorning the pendant.
The ear rings are huge. Mpst of them have the rings that carry us back, well a century or two perhaps. They would deafen the ears of the wqarer if the senses were alive to the noise of color.
Tam pins are numbered with the very latest' novelties. These have round ornamented heads from which three inch pendants of beads and tassels fall.
We*must say a word about ihe beautiful mesh bags. They are really most beautiful. They are called. the scale mesh bag because of the very shiny surface come in silver a,nd green gold and are of various shapes and sizes. One -oblong bag is attracting quite a bit of attention.

as it meant a power of which probably they had no knowledge. The first witness called by the defense was Peter Popovich. Peter said he was in the saloon of Bianchini, at Shirkieville, on the night of Nov. 13, 1916, and that Massa was in the saloon at that time. Tlie witness said he and Bianchini had stepped out of the saloon together, had stayed together, and that when they came back in the saloon a crowd of Italians were fighting. Popovich testified that someone had hit one of tlie Italians with a poker and that the crowd had fled together when somteone had doawn a revolver. He declared that a number of Serbians had remained in the saloon. He said he had been in the saloon for thjjee-quarters of ani hour after the crowd had left and that during this time Bianchini had not left the saloon.
During the cross examination the witness said the map who had held the revolver was not Peter Massa. He also said the man who drew the revolver was the man who had be^n knocked down. During the cross examination, the witness was asked concerning a number of statements he had made before the grand jury and when asked if he had made certain statements regarding Bianchini pushing someone out of the door of* the saloon he said he had not said Bianchini had pushed anyone out of the door. The questions concerning the grand jury testimony were put to the man by Prosecutor William E Horsley with the avowed intention on impeaching the witness.

Weather Blocks Teutons. Apparently the Russians have no need to apprehend an attack in force by the Germans on the northern front towards Petrograd in the immediate future. Warnings that such an attack was impending were recently issued in the Russian capital, based on German concentrations along this front, and it had been thought that Berlin might take advantage of the possible disorganization of the Russians, due to the recent radical changes in the form of government, and press an offensive. The spring thaw has now set in along the whole front, however, and operations on a large scale will be impossible therefore for some weeks.
Meanwhile the other fields, where the expected big Teutonic drive may be inaugurated, are being scanned. Attention is particularly attracted to th^
