The Tribune's Market Report

NEWS OF THE STOCK MARKET

NEW YORK, Sept. 23—United States Steel was the shining feature of today's session, transactions in that stock during the two hours, at the new record of $1.17^, surpassing any similar period. Dealings in steel embraced many individual lots of 2t000 to 5,000 shares, exclusive of the initial offerings of 15,000 shares. New records were also registered by leading coppers. Maxwell and Stutz motors and Central Leather. There was an undercurrent of irregularity, however, rails barely holding their oWn. while shippdng shares and some of munitions and equipments were distinctly reactionary. Gains were moderately shaded in the profit-taking of the last hour. The closing was strong. Bonds were firm..

CHICAGO BOARD OP TRADE.

CHICAGO, Sept. 23.—Higher cable quotations, apparently reflecting European uneasiness in regard to supplies, tended today to lift wheat prices here, as did reports of continued drought in Argentina. Opening prices, which ranged from %c to l%c higher, with December at $1.54% to $1.54% and May at $1.54% to $1.55, were followed by a slight additional upturn in some cases.

The close was steady at l%c to 2%c net advar.ee, with December at $1.55% to $1.55% and May at $1.55%.

Corn derived strength from wheat. After opening %c to %'c^higher, the market continued to rise.

The close was steady at %"o to net advance. Oats followed other cereals up grade.

Higher prices on hogs gave strength to provisions.
