The Confessions of Roxane
BY FRANCES W.4LTER.
(Copyright, 1916, by the McClure Newspaper Syndicate.
I ENTERTAIN A LOT OF SCANDAL MONGERS. The tongues of the gossips soon became so annoying that I determined to take steps to stop their talk about me. 1^ decided to invade the camp of the enemy.
Our town was not a large one, but the few people who lived in it loved amusement, and there was hardly a night that there was not a dance or a social function of some sort given by a member of the set in which I formerly moved. My plan was to give a reception, to be followed by a dance. I hit upon this program because I could invite both old and young. I asked

two young matrons who I knew had done most of the gossiping about me to assist mother and me in receiving. I could not conceive of a more effective way to satisfy their curiosity about me, and I made up my mind that I would tell them that Arthur had gone on a long business trip, and that it was necessary for me to return to my mother's home during his absence. I knew that nothing stimulated gossip so much as mystery, and I determined that there should be no more mystery thrown about me.
Mother entered heartily into my plan and assisted me in the preliminaries, but my main reliance carrying out the arrangements for the aftair was upon William. Of course 1 Sid not tell him my motive. I simply stated to him that I had been invited to so many places since my return-that I felt I was under social obligations to nearly every one in town, despite the tact that I had accepted none of the invitations which had been se^it me. William accepted my statements without enthusiasm, but he was plainly nonplussed. He could not understand why I wanted to entertain everybody in town, but he did not ask me any questins. Everything I told him to do he did with alacrity and he even made suggestions for the carrying out of certain details of the affair.

William did not care for social af fairs. He told me that he had only been to two or three receptions in his life., He did not dance and insisted that having reached the advanced age of 2S he was too old to learn. "But you may be sure of one thing, Roxane," he told me, "I shall enjoy being at your reception. If will be an unusual experience for me because I feel that this affair is partly my own, on account of the errands I have run for you in connection with it. I am almost sorry that I do not know how to dance, but I suppose I can entertain the aged and infirm while the younger folk are enjoying themselves whirling about the room." "You certainly will not «ntertain the 'aged and infirm," I told him, "for I shall keep you near my side the entire evening. You shall be my personal bodyguard, and if you dare to leave me I will stop the proceedings until you are sought out and brought back to your station." "You may be sure that I shall not wander very far from such an enviable place," he returned. "I think your difficulty will be in getting rid of me rather than in finding me." "I shall not want to get rid of you. I shall need you every minute, for you are to be the assistant mistress of ceremonies. If you knew how to dance I would lead the dance with you." "As it is, neither of us will dance?" he questioned quickly.
I glanced at him for a moment and saw that hie face was suddenly sobered.

"Why shouldn't I dance?" I asked him. "Just because you have neglected one of the gayest of arts, why should I become a, wallflower?"
"I
do not want you to dance," he insisted. "These young fellows about town who go to dances are not the kind of men for you, Roxane. There isn't one of them worthy to shake hands with you, much less to dance with you." "Oh! I don't know," I returned, "there is little Johnny Wilson, who, has the reputation of being the finest dancer in the county. All the girls say he dances 'divinely,' and I am sure he has a perfectly delightful odor about him. I think it is violet he uses. And there is Jimmy Dawson who is skilful enough to be a dancing master himself. The girls are all crazy about him, too."
William laughed. "If I took you seriously, Roxane, I would give you a long lecture," he taid. "As it is, I know you are jesting. You wouldn't dance with ^ither Johnny or Jimmy unless you were compelled to by circumstances." "But I may be compelled to dance with them, I told him. "I shall be the hostess and there are many things required of hostesses." "And I shall see to it that as my hostess you will be compelled to observe my wishes," he remarked determinedly. "If Johnny Wilson or any other Johnny asks you to dance with him you can depend upon me to prevent it even if I have to call the police. I am not going to see Mr.

Johnny Wilson place his arms about your waist when that privilege is denied me, simply because I have not learned to dance."
I could see that he meant every word he said, and I fancied that his threat would be carried, out even If he had to take some- one by the throat and throw' him out of the house. It was clearly my affair to manage things so that in entertaining my guests I shouldn't hurt my good friend, Billy Bent.
The reception came fully up to my expectations so far as the matter of attendance was concerned. Everybody I knew was there. I think the majority of them came out of curiosity, for they undoubtedly had heard a good deal of my affairs and they wanted to see me. Many of them, 1 imagined, longed for an opportunity to question me about Arthur, and some of them actually did bring up the subject, but to all questions I turned a radiantly happy countenance, which in itself was sufficient to disabuse £he minds of most of any suspicion that there was ar.y trouble between my husband and me. Old Mrs. Tompkins, whose tongue was known to lje the longest and sharpest in town, was not so easily satisfied. She insisted upon my giving her a large section of the history of my married life, and wound up with the remark, smilingly uttered, that "Mr. Pembroke had better come home or he would find a certain well known candidate for congress was in love with his wife."
The remark stunned-me for a mo

ment, but summoning my self-control I told the old spitfire that Mr. Pembroke would not hasten his return because he knew that his wife could be trusted under any circumstances.
Thereupon Mrs. Tompkins shook her head and observed that young women these days needed watching whether they were married or unmarried. "They are certainly being watched, apparently," I.'told her." "If not by their husbands and fathers at least by their neighbors. Unfortunately the reighbors do not stop at watching. They circulate reports of things that never occur and do their utmost to ruin perfectly good reputations."
Mrs. Tompkins appeared to make no personal application of my remark other than to observe that gossip was sinful and that she "never" listened tc it.
I gave others who I knew had talked about me an opportunity to question me about Arthur, and I believe most of them accepted my statement that he was on an extensive business' trip as true. In any event, I had shown them that I was not afraid to meet them face to face, and I hoped that the effect upon their tongues would be salutary.
I was so busy with the older people at the close of the reception that the dancing was in progress before the last of the elders had departed. When I returned to the music room most of the /couples were whirling about to the enchanting music of "Underneath the Stars." I ^glanced about for William, whom I had not seen since early in the evening, but he was nowhere to
