lATION'S BIGGEST NENJOIN LEAGUE
rganization to Re-elect President Wilson Has Many Distinguished Members.
NETV" YORK, Sept. 1.—The WoodDW Wilson Independent league is taking public the reasons why many 'e\v York business and professional len who, in 1912, supported either u-. Taft or Colonel Roosevelt, are now acking the president for re-election, housands are already enrolled in the «.gue and the number is increasing teadily each day.
These men assert that the Wilson dminisiration has put on the statute ooks much constructive and remedial igislation. A majority of them prolaim first of all that President Wilon has kept the United States out of he war madness that seemingly was weeping the world. These voters raise the president for his handling the acute Mexican situation. They cclaim his diplomacy for the peaceul and proper adjustment of the Luslania incident. They emphasize the act that the United States now enjoys Tiendly relations with Central aflid South America so cordial that no adoinistration In the history of the re•ublic could boast of it. The suspicion if the United States which has obained among Latin Americana for fenerations haa been entirely dispelled y the Wilson policies, these voters Lssert.
The unexampled prosperity now bang: enjoyed by the country is also sited by business men as an lmperaive and compelling: reason for letting veil enough alone and keeping that Vhich is good—to-wit, Wilson rule.
H. E. Lesan, president of a large idvertlslng company, says both his radical and conservative mind agree :hat Mr. Wilson is the man to serve luring the next four years as chief jxecutive of this nation.
The time has come for progressive steps for wealth equalization, suffrage, aetter labor conditions, better oppor:unitles for farmers and better opportunities for the small business man. To my mind President Wilson has put in the statute books thus far more legislation looking to the accomplishment of these ends than any other president we have had since the nation was founded. They will be improved but never removed." "President Wilson expresses the progressive program of reform," said Robert D. Kohn, architect, in giving his reasons for joining the independents, movement for Mr. Wilson. "As against Mr.- Wilson, Mr. Hughes represents the conservative forces of the country. Hughes opposed the income tax amendment to the state constitution when he was governor. MT. Wilson not only stands for a comprehenisive program of reform measures, but has already accomplished much of it.1
Herman W. Block, member of the firm of S. Stein & Co., woolen impor ters, who in 1912 voted for Mr. Taft, Bald: "Mr. Wilson has been very earnest and sincere in favoring reform measures and it is due to his forcefulness and efforts that much of the beneficial legislation was enacted by congress. Few administrations have a record equalling the present one. In the Mexican controversy he may have made slight mistakes—few men avoid errors—but despite all of the criticises of those vitally interested one way or another in Mexican affairs the president has succeeded in granting tho prayer of all of us and has kept us out of war with Mexico. "As for Mr. Hughes, I have not heard from him onei thing that would indicate that he ^ould have handled differently the problems that confronted the president. Mr. Hughes Is making votes for Mr. Wilson. He is the president's best vote getter today."
T. Newell Pfeiffer, assistant district attorney under Messrs. Whitman and Perkins, republicans, is strong in his praise of the president's attitude toward capital and labor. "Governor Hughes says welfare work for the laboring man should be initiated by the employer," commented Mr. Pfeiffer. "The Wilson idea is legislation making it possible for workers to do things for themselves—to recognize that the laboring man has rights and to put him in the position of asserting them. "It is evident that should the republican party be restored to power it would straightaway adopt a.n Imperialistic policy that would—I am convinced—plunge the United States into complications such as caused the war in Europe." "The Wilson administration repudiates the ancient arguments of the republicans," observes William A. Buck ner, secretary of the Street Railways
Advertising company, of New York. "The first was that you could not have prosperity under a democratic tariff law and secondly, that .the only American political party fit to rule was the republican party." "The Wilson administration has put through a program of reforms under abnormal conditions such as no previous administration can show," says John R. Gregg, president of the Gregg Publishing company. "No good reason has been shown for a change. We know that things are safe under Wilson we don't know how they would be under Hughes and the intemperate nature of his utterances seem to dispell the belief that has eixisted in the judicial quality of his judgment."'

an inside basket arrangement by which the clothing is tossed back and forth, baofc and forth, beating out the dirt. "The clothing is taken through two suds and then through rinse waters •varying from eight to ten," Mr. MeKeen said. "We believe in clothing being thoroughly rinsed. And by the way, here's the acid that eats up your clothes," he added, turning on a faucet from a tank, catching a handful of water and drinking it. "This is nothing but salt water—common ordinary salt—with an electric current passed through it. It takes the place of the fresh air and sun."
When one estimates on Mr. McKeen's figures that 75,000 gallons of water can be pumped daily from the two wells which supply the laundry, he finds that in a nine-hour day approximately 8,333 1-3 gallons may be drawn hourly. This would make in the neigh

borhood of 8,000 gallons of water used in washing one lot of clothing. "We believe in plenty of water," Mr. McKeen said, pointing to the numerous streams of hot water pouring through the cement troughs from the tubs.
Bluing and starching both are done by the use of machinery and then the clothing is ready to' dry. "Now, this is our backyard," Mr. McKeen said, indicating a slowly moving line of hooks onto which the garments were fastened. The line moved in the form of a square, exposing the clothing at first to air and then subjecting them to a hot room. It takes about thirty minutes for a line full to dry. "You've heard of that place down below," Mr. McKeen said, and then he opened a door from which issued stifling hot air. It was equal to or worse than a baker's oven. This room is used for drying the very heavy

Hand irons are used very little in the Columbian laundry. In the shirt ironing process, one girl" "does" the yokes with special machinery another, the neck band another" the cuffs another the shirt fron&, still another the backs, and finally a hand iron corrects any defects. Collars also are done by machinery, passing through about five processes before they are ready to be sent home.
Efficiency is the cry of the hour. Our business industries are .rising to meetthe demand, the Columbian laundry among them.
