Protest Now and Keep Mail Order Houses dut of the State Fair Grounds.
Terre Haute merchants Thursday were called on to put the kibosh on the plan of mall order houses outside of the state to use the state fair to boost their game. Letters were received here urging pressure on the state agricultural board and it is likely Terre Haute merchants will be heard from emphatically. The call to arms is as follows:
August 4, 1916.
To the Members of the Indiana Retail Merchants' association:— We are given to understand that the state board of agriculture is considering the granting of a permit to out-of-the-state mail order concerns to exhibit their merchandise at the state fair art Indianapolis, September 1 tc 8. It is hardly necessary to call your attention* to the fact that with such privilege the out-of-the-state mail order concerns -will have a tremendous advertising advantage over the state retail merchants,
Oonservatively estimated, from seventeen to twenty million dollars are spent annually by Indiana customers of out-of-tbe-«tate mail order houses, not a dollar 6f which ever comes back to Indiana hundreds of millions ar-3 invested in the retail stocks of merchandise in Indiana. The retail merchants of the state are. second in the payment of taxes. Hundreds of thousands of families derive their livelihood from the retailers of Indiana.
The state fair is an Indiana institution, supported by the state. To allow out-of-the-state mail order concerns •with no Investment in the state, paying no taxes and having no interest •whatever In th© state excepting the business they secure from it, to use the state fair as an advertising medium, does not appear just nor equitable to the merchants who support the state Institutions.
A committee representing this and six other commercial organizations held a conference with the board of agriculture last Tuesday, relative to permitting out-of-the-state mail order concerns exhibiting at the state fair. The committee was not assured by the board that the permit would not be granted.
Herein find the nanj.es of the members of the state board of agriculture who have charge of issuing permits or privileges to exhibitors at the state fair:
S. "W. Taylor, Boonville: H. M. Moberly, Shelby ville "W. G, Himmellwright, Franklin Charles N. Lindley, Salem Charles W. Travis, Lafayette S. J. Miller, R. F. I. 19, Indianapolis Cornelius O'Brien, Lawrenceburg Mason J. NIblack, Vincennes Daniel C. Reed, Attica B. Clore, Franklin J..jL, Thompson, Gas City Clem Graves, Bunker Hill: diaries H. Anthony, Muncie Samuel F. Spohn, Goshen John Isenbarger, N. Manchester Warren T. McCray, Kentland.
As a retail merchant of Indiana, will you write or wire each of them, voicing your opinion as to the policy of letting out-of-the-state mail order concerns exhibit at the state fair, thereby advertising their business to the dls-advantage of Indiana retail merchants and also thereby increasing the already too large business going to the out-of-the-state mail order concerns.
It is .very important that you either write or wire the members of the state board of agriculture at once, for if the out-of-the-state mail order concerns are to be allowed to use the state fair as an advertising medium it can only result in further damage to the legitimate business of retailers of Indiana.
If you cannot wire, write each of the board named herein and do it today. Very truly vours, INDIANA RETAIL MERCHANTS' AS
SOCIATION. C. M. Mills, President.

STOKE HAS ANMVERSAEY.
Paige Music Company Holds Remarkable Record. Forty-nine years ago this month the musical instrument house of W. H: Paige and company was founded and ever since that date the establishment has been doing an ever increasing business in Terre Haute.
The house is one of the' oldest in western Indiana, having been founded by William H. Paige,- tather of the present members of the firm, in 1867. The present members of the firm are Fred L. and Warner H. Paige. The elder Mr. Paige was a music instructor in the schools at the time that he decided to establish the business. Associated with him were Prof. E. C. Kilbourne and W. B. Wharton. The sales room of the company was at the northeast corner of Sixth street* and Wabash avenue.
As his health failed the elder Mr. Paige turned his business over to his son, Fred, and later Warner also became a member of the firm. The first stock consisted of pianos, organs and musical instruments- About 15 years ago player pianos were added to the list and later victrolas and Edisoi* talking machines.
