NEW YORK. Aug. 8.—Aside from further variable grains in hitherto inactive specialties, prices at the opening of today's market were without material change. Consolidated Gas added 2% points to yesterday's advance and issues like United Cigar Stores, International Paper preferred, California Petroleum preferred and American Corn Products mined substantial fractions to a point Rails and other standard shares manifested all of their recent indifference to favorable earnings and trade conditions. Dealings were on a limited scale, with a continued lack of public interest.
Prices hardened in all quarters during the forenoon, the short interest being again impelled to cover on the apparent scarcity of stocks for speculative purposes. United States Steel assumed its former place as the most active issne and was freely taken at i* fractional advance. Rails also improved, although Reading and Union Pacific were the only representative issues to show substantial gains. Marine preferred, the- Mexicans. Beet Sugar and some of the war and semi-war descriptions rose a point or better, with as much for Third Avenue. Bonds were Irregular and featurelesss.
The market was at its highest levels in the final hour. but reacted moderately on publication of the crop report confirming recent estimates of damage to corn and wheat. The closing was firni.

CHICAGO BOARD 01? TRADE.
CHICAGO, Aug. 8. Lower cable quotations had a depressing effect today on the wheat market here. Opening prices, which ranged from *£g!%c to l%c lower, with September at $1.31% to $1.32 and December at $1.35 to $1.36, were followed by a moderate additional setback.
The close was.firm, %c to %c net higher, with September-at $1.33%, and December at $1.37.
Rains in Kansas and Illinois has weakened the corn market. After opening %@%c to l%c down, prices made only slight rallies.
The close was unsettled at a range varying from 14c off to %@%c up as compared with yesterday's finish.
Oats gave way with other, cereals. Highest quotations on ho^s put strength into pork and ribs.
