ADVANCE MIR PRICES

War Has Increased the Expense of Production of Books In England.

Many of the London publishers have notified the booksellers that the price of their books will in future be raised one penny in the shilling, and as a cot sequence the city booksellers have already informed their customers that only 2d in the shilling instead of 3d will be allowed on discount books. The west end booksellers have not yet taken this course, but it is expected thai they, too, will fall Into line during the next few days.

Some criticisms are leveled by the booksellers against the publishers, who, it is stated, have failed to grasp the situation courageously by issuing all bcoks at a net price and thus insuring uniformity of treatment to the customer throughout the country. Apparently one difficulty is the question of school books, upon which the school masters desire to obtain the trade disccunt to themselves.

The head of a large firm in High Holborn which has already initiated the higher prices explained that the increase to the public does not represent the whole of the extra cost to the bookseller, who would much prefer the pre-war position. For instance, in cases where the bookseller was charged 3V£d more by the publisher he was placing only 3d on the purchaser. At present, too, the bookseller ir. the city had not made any difference in the price of the ordinary 6s discount book, and was «^ll offering

this at 4s 6d ($1.10), though he thought that presently some re-arrangement would have to be made. He recognized the necessity c&st upon the publishers-. by the higher cost of production, such as the heavier charges for paper and labor. The booksellers were also experiencing additional burdens in several directions, but found difficulty in placing all these additional charges onto the shoulders of the public. To some extent they were, therefore, bearing these themselves.

Next month, according to thte authority, the prices of some magazines and monthly publications were to be raised. The Strand Magazine will be net, and likewise the Religious Tract Society was charging net prices for their monthly publications, such^ as the Boy's Own Paper and the Sunday at Home. With the January number Bradshaw's Railway Guide had been raised in price from 6d to Is.

Another effect of the war conditions as the practical stoppage of the 7d bound volume by several publishers, who followed Messrs. Nelson's innovation. These 7d volumes have proved very popular with the public, and hundreds of thousands have been sold, but the general rise in cost of production is now militating against their profitable issue. Messrs. Nelson's are, however, continuing their 7d products owing, it is understood, to the satisfactory arrangements they have devised in respect to paper, print and binding in their own works.

The general output of books Is also declining, and the bookseller in question stated that there were evidences of a stricter control of book publishirg. Evidences of selection were apparent, and books without a reasonable chance of success were more scarce than before the war.—Westminster Gazette.
