WIFE BEAIER HEAVILY SENTENCED BY COURT

Sent to Penal Farm for 330 Says Following Testimony By Woman Before Judge Newton.

A sentence of 330 days, to be served on the penal farm, was inflicted on Andrew McKinzie, 49 years old, who was found guilty of assault on his wife, Laura McKinzie, by Judge Newton in City Court Thursday morning.

McKinzie was arrested Wednesday night at Twenty-First and Third avenue by Patrolman Cedars, after MoKlnzle administered a beating to his wife with & club. The wife was severely injured and had to be taken to the St. Anthony's hospital.

In City Court Thursday morning she appeared with her wrists swollen and bandaged, a finger on her left hand broken and blaok and blue spots on her arms and body.

She testified that she and her 14 year old son, Edward, went to a neighborhood picture .show Wednesday night, but that the heat became stifling and as she waa under a doctor's care, she left the show and went to a friend's house near. She said after the show waa over the boy forgot to come for her. On hta way home the boy met the father, .who started beating him with a club. The boy Jerked away and ran, she said, and a few minutes later she met her husband. She said he accused her of "running around" and attacked her with the club until he was stopped by the police.

McKinzie testified his wife left the house too often and that she was uncleanly In her housework.

Mrs. McKinzie testified she was forced to work to maintain the family of six children. She said her husband had not given her 5 In five years.

Newby's Case Continued.

The aase of John Newby, 1822 North Twelfth and One-Half street, charged with assault and battery on his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Newby, and his sister, Mrs. Hazel Smith, 1518 Maple aveAue, was continued until Friday aft(^noon In City Court Thursday morning after Newby had pleaded not guilty.

The police say Newby pointed a double barrelled shot gun at them when he was arrested and he is also charged with drawing deadly weapons.

BIKE MEN ENJOY OUTING.

Say Event Wednesday Was Best Yet Held By Organization, Members of the Terre Haute Bicycle Dealers' association said Thursday that the annual outing Wednesday at the Hulman farm was the best the organization had ever given. More than 60 persons made the trip, the party being composed of members of the organization and of traveling salesmen who visit this city.

The trip to the Hulman farm was made on the boat Welcome and with Ed Tetsel at the. wheel the trip-was made In aboqt two hours.

On the return trip a stop was made at Horseshoe bend and another spread was served. The H. T. Hearsey company presented each man with a fancy head gear and Ross Evans gave each picnicker a white necktie. The guests were M. O. Strang, United States Tire company C. R. Sheets, O. H. GAS COMPANY IS HOST. Department Heads and Employes Have Annual Banquet.

A banquet for the department heads and employes of the Citizens Gas and Fuel oompany was served in the Hoosier nook at the Hotel Doming Wednesday evening.

The "taboo" was placed on shop-talk and the event took the nature of a get-to-gether affair.

The banquet was given on a promise made last year by C. D. Shaul, general manager, that if more gas ranges were sold during June, 1916, than were sold in June, 1915, he would give the banquet. While 160 were sold last year, 1-75 were disposed of this year. The banquet was followed by a smoker and "gab-fest." H. C. Howard, chief engineer of the New York office, was the honor guest.

COBTTRN PLAYERS COME.

Present Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice'1 At the Normal. The Coburn players will return to the Normal hall Thursday night, presenting "The Merchant of Venice. Mrs. Coburn, in the part ot Portia, is ranked by critics as among the best in this part. Mr. Coburn will appear as Shylock. Especial pains have been take.i by the company tc make the costumes perfect reproductions of those worn during the period with which the play deals.

Last year these players presented "Macbeth" hore and pleased a large audience.

Patrons of the T. M. C. A. swimming pool are greatly pleased with the addition of the new slide which has been recently installed. The slide is two feet wide and 26 feet long and has a fall of ten feet. It is suspended from the ceiling so that it does not interfere with the swimmers and is reached by U «. ladder*
