HE SAYS HE'S fOR PEACE

Continued From Pag* One.

that is that the United States will play a. new part and that it will be a part of unprecedented opportunity and gt-eatly increased responsibilities."

Timidity must be cast aside by those who seek the world trade, he said, and a knowledge of conditions of business a&d conditions "throughout the round globe," will be essential to success. "No amount of mere push, no amount of mere hustling, or, to speak in the western language, no amount of mere rustling, no amount of mere active enterprise will suffice," he declared and later added "In the relationship of nations with each other many of our antagonisms are based on misunderstandings and as long as you do not understand a country you cannot trade with it. "Lift up your eyes to the horizons of business," he concluded. "Do not look too closely at the little processes with which you are concerned, but let your thoughts and your imaginations run abroad throughout the whole world and with inspiration of the thought that you are Americans and are meant to carry liberty and justice and the principles of humanity wherever you go go out and sell goods that will make the world more comfortable and more happy and convert them to the principles of America."

From the hall the president went to the Detroit athletic club, where he held a reception to the congress. Thousands of, people stood along the streets outside the club and applauded when he posed for a motion picture.

The president declared that the merchant marine, which some are so slow in giving us, will be a great help to the business interests of the United States.

Given Demonstration.

In order to gain foreign business he added it will be necessary for American business to adopt the goods to the demands of other countries and not try to force their own fdeas on other markets. Salesmanship, he said, would go hand in hand with statesmanship after the close of the war.

No more patriotic nor enthusiastic reception has greeted the president recently than he received here. Thousands of "persons lined the streets through which he passed and when he entered the hall, the entire audience arose and waved Aiuerican flags.

President Wilson's party included Mrs. Wilson, Secretary Tumulty and Congressman F. Doremus, of Michigan.

As the'party was driven to the convention hall a cannon thundered the presidential salute. A large crowd at the station welcomed President and Mrs. Wilson.

Ford Sends Greetings.

Henry Ford, the manufacturer, sent the president a message expressing confidence he would keap the United States out of war.

President Wilson promises today that he would deliver a platform speech ^t the Union station in Toledo on his way back to Washington.

Although the route of the presidential special was to have been kept secret crowds were gathered at every station through which it passed last night and today. The president, however did not appear at any of them and there were -no demonstrations.

After speaking at the salesman congress President Wilson was to hold a public reception. This afternoon he is to yisit an automobile factory. He will leave for Washington at 4 p. m.

HEALTH BOARD TO MEET.

Discusses Control of Infantile Paralysis if Mcnace Reaches City. A meeting of the city board of health will be held at city hall Monday night to discuss preventative measures to be taken against the rapidly spreading epidemic of infantile paralysis over the country. While no cases of the •disease have as yet been found in •Terre Haute a case has been discovered in Burnett, and in several other Indiana cities.

W. F. Willien, president of the health board, warned Monday against the use of any but pastue'rized milk for infants. "It is thought," said Dr. Willien, "That the germs of the disease are carried in milk and that these germs get into the milk after it has been delivered.- As milk, after it has been sterilized, is useless to infants as nourishment, pasturized milk only should be used. "All children at this time, too, should be kept out of public gatherings and off the streets as much as possible as the germs are. also carried in dust."
